A new type of collectible has been discovered in the high-definition remake of Shadow of Colossus that rewards players with a special item if all of them are collected.

The original Shadow of Colossus contained two sets of optional collectibles for players to find: Fruit Trees and Lizard Tails. The Fruit Trees would increase your health gauge, while the Lizard Tails would boost the character's stamina.

The remake, however, includes a new third set of collectibles called 'Enlightenments', which some players refer to as gold coins. It's easy to find Enlightenments since they appear as shining lights on the ground, but their purpose has been a bit of a mystery until recently.

Shadow of the Colossus remake reviews PS4

As many assumed, the text within the game's ending credits about the "79 steps of enlightenment" was indeed a hint to the number of Enlightenments found in the game. Now we know that once all of them have been collected, players can find a sword hidden in a cavern underneath the starting temple.

The weapon is called the Sword of Dormin, which is a name players will recognize. Dormin is the mysterious entity that guides Wander through the game, occasionally offering advice along the way. Equipping the Sword of Dormin reduces health regeneration, but provides a large boost to damage output.

While the discovery of the sword seems straightforward, curious players can't help but wonder if there is still more to it. Whether the sword serves any greater purpose is unknown at this time, but we'll be sure to update if anything new is discovered.

The Shadow of Colossus remake was released just a few short days ago and is a marked improvement upon the original title. The reviews have been positive across the board, with many noting the stunning graphical overhaul for a game already revered for its beauty.

The Shadow of the Colossus remake is now available exclusively on PS4.
