Netflix has released a new Shadow and Bone season 2 trailer featuring some much-anticipated new faces and characters.

Based on the series of books, The Grishaverse, by Leigh Bardugo, Netflix's Shadow and Bone follows the plight of Alina (Jessie Mei Li), a magical “Grisha” and cartographer, as she battles King Kirigan, a.k.a. The Darkling (Ben Barnes), and his Shadow Fold, with the help of friends and co-conspirators.

The Shadow and Bone season 2 trailer teases what to expect from this new season, which draws from the 2nd book in the series, Siege and Storm. However, it also reveals many new Shadow and Bone characters, including Nikolai Lantsov, the Prince of Ravka, played by Patrick Gibson (The Portable Door, The OA), and Wylan Hendriks, a Crow's demolition expert played by Jack Wolfe (The Magic Flute, The Witcher). The Shadow and Bone season 2 trailer, which opens with a confrontation with The Darkling and his shadow army, introduces Gibson as Prince Ravka, the captain of a fleet of ships seeking the assistance of Alina. Ravka becomes another contender in the vying for the protagonist’s affections alongside her friend, Mal Oretsev (Archie Renaux), and her strange connection with The Darkling.

Alina and the Crows seek out the Amplifiers, mythical creatures that can aid in boosting her powers. They are aided by Wolfe's Wylan Hndriks, munitions expert for the crows, seen in the trailer several times amid explosions and weaponry. Season two also brings the addition of the Twins, played by Anna Leong Brophy (Back, Traces) and Lewis Tan (Mortal Kombat, Wu Assassins). They are part Grisha themselves and have aligned themselves with Prince Ravka. The newcomers join a returning cast that includes Kaz Brekker, Inej Ghafa, Jesper Fahey, Nina Zenik, Genya Safin, and Matthias Helvar.

Fans of the book series and season one will be happy to see their favorite characters and some important new ones among the dizzying scenes of the new Shadow and Bone trailer, which promises the great effects, monsters, and magic of its first successful season on Netflix. Alina's plight in facing off with the Darkling and the intricately created world of the show has made it successful with readers and viewers. Gibson and Wolfe, who seem to embrace their characters well in the trailer, will be welcomed additions to a cast that already is strong in performances, pointing to new successes for this popular fantasy series.

Shadow and Bone season 2 debuts on Netflix on March 16, 2023.
