According to recent twitter updates from Devolver Digital, the third numbered title in the eponymous franchise is far enough along that the marketing campaign is about to officially begin. Serious Sam 3 is coming, and Sam is ready to kill another 5000 or so alien baddies.
You may remember that Devolver Digital and Croteam brought Serious Sam back in a big way to the PC late last year with a very welcome high definition update, Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter. It later released on Xbox 360, along with an HD update of The Second Encounter earlier this year. These re-releases were the first games to use the engine that will power Serious Sam 3, the aptly named Serious Engine 3.
Both titles performed extremely well on both Steam and Xbox Live, with not only a classic game for a new generation of gamers, but some added multiplayer incentives. Co-op made its appearance on The First Encounter, allowing up to 16 players to play through the campaign together. The Second Encounter brought another new mode, Co-op Tournament. Hopefully we will see all these multiplayer additions make their way to the new entry.
There has not been much information released on the title since it was confirmed as being in development last year, so it is good to hear that we won't have to wait much longer. In a world full of Black Ops and Medal of Honor, it's nice to occasionally see a game that doesn't take itself too seriously (excuse the pun). A game with a good sense of humor is hard to find, but I've almost always got a smile on my face when playing through a Serious Sam game.
How do you feel about Sam "Serious" Stone? Are you a fan of the zany FPS, or are you going to stick with Call of Duty?
Serious Sam 3 is scheduled to be released some time in 2011 for PC, Xbox 360, and PS3.
