Fan art is a wonderful medium for any number of "what if" scenarios. From imaginary crossovers to fun little alternate timelines where the artist's favorite characters just get to enjoy life without constant agony (look, just let Lara Croft and Sam live their lives in peace), it allows the artist to bring out some of their most unconventional ideas just to see how they might look if the world were a bit zanier. For example, Take this DC fan art of Selena Gomez as DC's Zatanna.

One such application of the idea is fan casting, allowing artists to imagine how things might look if their favorite actor or actress took on the role of their favorite character. Some feel right at home, like Vin Diesel as Mr. Freeze, while others like to push the envelope a bit with their creativity. But this latest DC-related offering definitely seems to be in the former category, and after one look at the artwork in question, it's pretty easy to see why it would work so well.

Fan artist and KISS fan Carlos Gzz has proposed a casting choice that almost seems like a no-brainer. In one particular work, he depicts actress Gomez in the role of DC Comics' cunning magician Zatanna, and it could almost be an official announcement poster. Her look meshes remarkably well with the character's elegant and flashy outfit, compounded by that deadpan expression that fans have come to love from the actress and singer.

Gomez currently stars alongside comedy legends Steve Martin and Martin Short in Hulu's Only Murders In The Building, displaying that same dry wit and personality that emanates from the artwork. It's a personality choice that would instantly fit well into the role of Zatanna, who uses her sorceress powers as part of the Justice League while always managing to maintain an impressive stage presence. While Gomez might not be some people's first choice for such a flamboyant character, her take could add some interesting dimensions to the magical hero and performer.

This also brings up the idea of how Zatanna will translate into the current superhero movie climate for the hero's upcoming HBO Max film. One look at the character and it's rather clear that, at the very least, her outfit could probably use an update. Contrary to the predictable defenses like "she chooses to look that way, it's female empowerment" that conveniently ignores the fact that the character was created by two men, that costume in a modern film could rather easily be seen as objectifying to the character and the actress. Similar to how Birds Of Prey's Black Canary used a much more sensible outfit compared to the hero's classic fishnet look, it would be nice to see something practical when Zatanna makes her big/small screen debut.

Either way, it's clear that Gomez would absolutely be a great fit for Zatanna, at least visually. Odds are she won't end up being the one cast for the HBO Max movie, but even so, it's fun to think about. Hopefully, the film ends up being as enjoyable in its medium as Carlos Gzz's artwork is in its own.

Zatanna is currently in development.
