Death is a major theme in many of FromSoftware's games, with the studio even marketing titles based on their difficulty and how many times players are going to die. The same holds true for the upcoming Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, though the way it handles death will be a bit different than what we've seen from other FromSoftware titles.

In Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, players will be able to resurrect. This will impact the game in terms of its gameplay as well as the story, which, according to director Hidetaka Miyazaki, will center around the concept of resurrection. From a gameplay perspective, players will be able to resurrect in creative ways to actually gain an advantage over their opponents in some cases, though Miyazaki stopped short of providing any specific examples.

Since FromSoftware games are famous for their high difficulty level, some fans may be worried that resurrection will make Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice too easy. However, Miyazaki says that Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is balanced to keep the resurrection feature in mind, and that without resurrection, it would ruin the "tempo" of the game. Anyone still worried that Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice will be too easy should note that FromSoftware has previously claimed it will be more challenging than Dark Souls.

The resurrection ability sounds like an interesting concept that should help Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice stand out from other FromSoftware titles. Of course, it's been said that Sekiro is not a "Soulsborne" game, so some major differences are to be expected, but otherwise it looks to be retaining the studio's signature high difficulty level and challenging combat.

While it does seem similar to past FromSoftware games, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is different in many other ways. Besides the resurrection mechanic, the game is also ditching multiplayer, which has served as a key feature in past titles from the studio, including the aforementioned Dark Souls games.

From what we can tell, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is attempting to be something both new and familiar at the same time. Whether or not fans embrace it remains to be seen, but considering FromSoftware's track record, the safe bet is that it will be another critically-acclaimed hit.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice will launch in early 2019 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
