Back in the 90s, Sonic the Hedgehog was the face of the SEGA Genesis, the latest mascot made to take on Mario and Nintendo. A lot has changed since then, but Sonic has remained ever-popular, being found in comics and even the big screen as of late. SEGA takes any chance it can to bring Sonic to new media, and reportedly the next venue for Sonic is Vtube Livestreaming.

"Virtual Tuber" or just Vtuber Livestreams, use a 2D or 3D model is as an avatar for the streamer, rigged to their facial expressions so the viewers can still watch them react. The method gained traction in Japanese streaming circles first before taking off as the newest phenomenon.

The report comes from Ryokutya2089, an insider on published Japanese magazines such as Famitsu and Weekly Shonen Jump. Siliconera proposes that this information comes from the Sonic column Famitsu is set to release on June 24th. It's said that Kazuyuki Hoshino was the one to mention the idea of Sonic becoming a Vtube streamer, aiming to have it be that Sonic "communicates with fans" in real-time.

Currently, Hoshino is an artist working for Sonic Team in many different roles, but he is most known for being one of the character designers behind Amy Rose and Metal Sonic. Alongside his comments on Sonic Vtuber streaming personally, came further mentions of SEGA wanting to open up a Sonic the Hedgehog theme park, which SEGA has already discussed for the UK and US in the future.

Whether this event will come to pass or in what way will need to be seen later on when SEGA announces it itself. The idea of a character coming to life to interact with fans through the same methods of Vtubers has been seen before, as Yu-Gi-Oh!'s own Seto Kaiba has done so for a miniature tournament in the past. Sonic playing his own titles and making comments seems like an exciting endeavor for fans and the hedgehog's voice actors, though whether or not it will be Roger Craig Smith or his Japanese voice actor is completely unknown.

Sadly, depending on how SEGA decides to handle the event depends on how accessible it will be, and to which fans. Vtubing got its start with Japanese streamers, but there's a chance that in place of Sonic's previous Twitter Takeovers, this may be how the hedgehog talks to fans instead. No matter what, if SEGA lets Sonic the Hedgehog stream on Twitch in any fashion, there will be something to enjoy for plenty of fans out of it, especially younger ones who may already watch Vtubers in their own time.
