The match-three mobile game SEGA Heroes will be officially shutting down on May 21 following the separation of SEGA and the game's developer Demiurge. The puzzle title brought together characters from various games across SEGA's 60-year history.

While the two entities agreed to separate in such a way that Demiurge could assume full ownership of the studio, it will lose the right to work with SEGA characters from series like Sonic the Hedgehog, Super Monkey Ball, and Yakuza. As of Thursday all in-app purchases were deactivated and every bit of special content throughout the game's life has been unlocked so players can get the most out of the experience before May 21.

Players are able to request refunds for any "real-money purchases" made on or after March 17 in SEGA Heroes, and SEGA ends the notice by thanking the "talented" developer as well as fans of the game. This move comes a few weeks after Demiurge's co-founder purchased the company back from SEGA.

Though fans of SEGA and its characters will be disappointed by this announcement, there are other mobile games on the market that serve similar purposes. For instance, Nintendo's Fire Emblem Heroes and Pokemon Masters also unite characters from across their respective franchises.

SEGA Heroes will be deactivated on May 21, 2020.
