Over the past few years, the popularity of retro gaming and miniature classic consoles being released has seen a steady rise, and SEGA is no exception to the rule. While the company revealed the SEGA Genesis Mini last year, the first wave of games coming to the system weren't announced until just recently, leaving fans to speculate what the remaining three-quarters of the console's playlist, which totals to 40 classic games, would include.

Today, SEGA pulled the curtain back on the next wave of games coming to the SEGA Genesis Mini when it launches later this Fall. As with the initial wave of ten games that were revealed at the time the launch date was confirmed, yet another ten SEGA classics have been added to the playlist. This means half of the system's official lineup has now been unveiled. Both the Japan and Western versions of the SEGA Genesis Mini have received separate lists of games added.

Here are the ten newly announced SEGA Genesis Mini games coming to the West version:

  • Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse
  • Earthworm Jim
  • Landstalker: The Treasures of King Nole
  • Probotector
  • Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master
  • Sonic the Hedgehog 2
  • Streets of Rage II
  • Super Fantasy Zone
  • Thunder Force III
  • World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck

The new wave of titles join the likes of ToeJam & Earl, Castlevania: Bloodlines, Altered Beast, and Sonic the Hedgehog, which were part of the first wave reveals. Of the newly announced games, Sonic the Hedgehog II could be considered the most significant of the bunch, as it ended up being the second best-selling game in the original SEGA Genesis's lifespan (only trailing Sonic the Hedgehog).

Given the approach to game reveals thus far, it's likely SEGA will reveal more games in the next couple of months, and once more towards the end of the summer to give enough time for potential buyers to weigh-in on the value of the console, which will cost $79.99 at launch.

It seems as though SEGA's approach for its mini console is to emphasize a larger quantity of games in comparison to its main competitors. Between the NES, SNES, and PlayStation Classic systems, those consoles' playlists consisted of 30, 21, and 20 games, respectively. This is also before mentioning any of the PlayStation Classic's issues that surfaced when the console launched in December, as it was clear Sony rushed through production to get it out in time for the holidays, something the SEGA Genesis Mini will surely want to avoid.

The SEGA Genesis Mini will launch of September 19th, 2019.
