Sega recently came out and announced plans to look back at their history of franchises and games in order to figure out what they should reboot and or remaster. They have an incredible library of games spanning multiple generations of consoles to look at and consider.
With Sonic Colors getting the treatment soon, fans have been wondering which other games might be on the list. There are many classic titles from Sega's lineups
10 Yakuza Kenzan/Ishin
There was a drought for a while when Yakuza games weren’t being localized but that fear is almost gone now. That doesn’t mean there aren’t trapped entries still in Japan. There are two samurai spinoffs for example. Yakuza Kenzan was a 2008 PS3 game while Yakuza Ishin came out in 2014 for the PS3 and PS4. A collection with both of those would be great but fans would also likely settle for at least one remaster.
9 Binary Domain
On the subject of Yakuza, that team spun off to create something completely unrelated with Binary Domain. The easiest way to describe it is Japan’s Terminator future. It’s a squad-based third-person cover shooter. It released on the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC in 2012 and has not come back to consoles since. It’s not even backwards compatible on Xbox One.
8 Alpha Protocol
Alpha Protocol might be tricky to remaster. Sega published it but Obsidian Entertainment made it who is now owned by Microsoft.
Sega owns the IP rights so presumably, they could bring this 2010 PS3, Xbox 360, and PC game back. All they need to do is work with Microsoft. It could even be an Xbox exclusive as a remaster which is better than nothing.
7 Skies Of Arcadia
Sega has had plenty of RPG series over the years but few have struck as hard as the sky pirate themed Skies of Arcadia. It released on the Dreamcast in 2000 and was then ported to the GameCube in 2003 in North America. There were plans to port it to the PS2 as well along with ideas for a sequel floating around. However, both of those projects never saw the light of day. It’s not too late for a remaster though.
6 Valkyria Chronicles III
Valkyria Chronicles is a good modern JRPG series from Sega. It doesn’t sell that well but most titles get great reviews and tons of fan support albeit through niche channels.
On the subject of fans, they have been pining for this third entry since it released in 2011 on the PSP in Japan. If Square Enix can port over a translated SNES game twenty-odd years later then so can Sega for its 10th anniversary.
5 Jet Set Radio Future
After Sega stopped making console games exclusively for the Dreamcast, they partnered with Microsoft. The original Xbox got a great lineup thanks to this partnership and Jet Set Radio Future is one of those games. Unfortunately, it has been trapped on the console since 2002. It’s not even backwards compatible on Xbox One which is crazy.
4 Dragon Force
The Dreamcast has a lot of games stuck on its system, but the Sega Saturn has it beat. One game fans have been clamoring to see return is Dragon Force which released in 1996 exclusively for the system. It got a PS2 port in Japan which then became backwards compatible digitally on PS3, but it has not been seen in North America since. On top of that, the sequel was never translated. A double-pack remaster would be great.
3 Phantasy Star Online
Microsoft shocked the world when they announced they’d be bringing over Phantasy Star Online 2 to the Xbox One after years of it being trapped exclusively in Japan. It’s getting a sequel expansion this year which is great, but fans may also like to go back to the original that started it all. It was on the original Xbox so if a remaster is too much to ask, hopefully Sega and Microsoft can make another backwards compatibility deal.
2 Shinobi/Nightshade
In 2002, Sega rebooted the Shinobi series on PS2. Not only that but it got a sequel, Nightshade, which was the same basic concept but with a female ninja. Both games were good, not great, which might be why not much happened with the series after this. A remastered PS2 collection could help stir up fan support once more.
1 Captain America: Super Soldier
In the beginning of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sega had the exclusive rights to publishing the movie games. Among the four that came out, this Captain America game was seen as the best critically. The main console versions were likened to the Batman Arkham series. It’s not as good as those games but this game is still worthwhile.
As a movie tie-in game, it did seem to get rushed. Next Level Games did the best they could and it turned out pretty well. That developer is known mostly for Nintendo games such as Punch-Out on Wii, Super Mario Strikers, and Luigi’s Mansion 3.
