Sega announced earlier this week that the company would be releasing a miniature version of the Game Gear, a handheld system produced by Sega in the early 90s and was discontinued in 1997. The company is doing this as a way of celebrating the company's 60th anniversary. Though, the miniature versions of the Game Gear are unfortunately missing a cult classic title from this bygone era of gaming.

While the Game Gear wasn't the most popular piece of gaming hardware upon its release, having unfortunately lagged behind the Game Boy in terms of sales, it remains a treasured piece of gaming history. These miniature versions of the Game Gear come in four different colors and each version contains four different Game Gear games. However, none of the Game Gear variations contain Sonic: Triple Trouble.

Sonic: Triple Trouble is the lesser-known sequel to Sonic Chaos. Both games were released for the Game Gear in the mid-90s and are widely considered to be some of the best games on the Game Gear. Many fans have also asserted that Sonic: Triple Trouble is one of the most underappreciated Sonic the Hedgehog games ever created.

For a game that came out during the golden days of Sonic the Hedgehog, it definitely stands toe to toe with some of the best that the series has to offer. The use of dynamic power-ups never seen in any preceding title, unique level design, and an intense level of polish and presentation made this game an unrequited classic. It truly is unfortunate that Sega decided to not include Sonic: Triple Trouble as one of the games featured on the Game Gear Micro.

It's also rather unfortunate that there won't be that much variety in terms of the games featured on the Game Gear Micro. Each version of the system comes with only four games, which are different depending on the version. Perhaps it's due to the small scale of the handheld, but this selection pales in comparison to the Sega Genesis Mini, which came out a year prior.

Despite this, the release of the Game Gear Micro will give so many people the opportunity to experience classic Game Gear titles for the very first time. Compared to one person who purportedly bought a singular Game Gear game for retail price back in 2018, this will serve as a much easier way for players to experience the Game Gear. Hopefully, the Game Gear Micro will succeed just as much as the Sega Genesis Mini.

The Game Gear Micro is set to release sometime in 2020.
