The 60th anniversary of Sega is almost here and the company is celebrating in a big way. There is already an anniversary website set up for the occasion, but rumors are circulating that Sega also has a major announcement forthcoming. There is plenty of speculation on what the news could be, but according to the source that teased the information, it will shake things up in the game industry.

Japanese tech journalist Zenji Nishikawa is at the source of all the latest hoopla, teasing at first that he had the scoop on a game company that everyone loves, later revealing that the company in question was Sega. Microsoft has been at the center of most speculation, with many assuming the announcement will be the company's acquisition of Sega. In recent years, Microsoft has been acquiring game studios left and right, so it isn't entirely out of the realm of possibility.

Another assumption is that Microsoft and Sega instead have struck a deal, allowing the upcoming Xbox Series X to be distributed under the Sega name in Japan. This change in marketing strategy could aid Microsoft with the use of product familiarity. As the dismal sales of Xbox One in Japan have shown, the company could use the help. If this turns out to be the case, it will mark the first time Sega has had its name on a console since the Dreamcast released in 1998.

There is always the chance Sega could be getting back into the console-making game on its own, but it is highly doubtful. Especially since rumors of a collaboration between Sega and Microsoft have been stirring for a while now. A leaked ad featuring Sega and Microsoft back in April suggests some sort of partnership has long been in the works. The leak was of a screenshot from an advertisement originally planned for the now-canceled E3 2020. It shows the Sega and Microsoft logos side-by-side with the words "power your dreams" beneath them.

Audiences won't have to wait long to find out what's what, as everything is set to be revealed sometime this week. Sega's 60th-anniversary celebration officially kicks off on June 3, but the big announcement may come after. According to many sources, Sega will lay it all out at the Guerrilla Collective digital games fest, which runs from June 6 - 8.
