There's plenty to love about a dynamic player vs. environment (PvE) game that one can play with friends, especially when the objective of the game is exterminating mutant dinosaurs. Here is a list of pro tips to help Second Extinction newcomers jump into the fray.

10 Be Prepared to Commit Some Time

Starting a mission in Second Extinction

If there is one tip to know that is most important, it is this one: players need to be sure they have a lot of time set aside to enjoy the game to its fullest. Missions will reward players handsomely based on objectives completed, the number of accolades earned, and dinosaurs killed.

In order to progress, one has to put in the man-hours necessary to farm resources and upgrades, and due to the co-op nature of the game, if one is queueing up with random people, it would be a shame to cost everyone else the success of a mission because something personal came up 45 minutes into one forcing an early evacuation.

9 Consume Items Before Picking Up New Ones

Using a Health Pack in Second Extinction

This is a difficult habit to get used to because everybody's first inclination after clearing an area of enemies is to immediately scour the place for the hard-earned items and loot. Think of it as a tip for building maximum efficiency in item use.

Spending an hour out on the map with supplies dwindling can be a scary thing, especially when a dino encounter can go horribly wrong at any time. It's best to be prepared for the worst at all times and cycle items and reserves properly. It is a game of survival, after all.

8 Dodge, Dodge, Dodge

The dinosaurs in this game have specific attack patterns and movements programmed into them, just like in any other game with giant enemies running around. It's tempting to want to get up close and personal and blast through enemies like mowing down a horde of zombies, but it's better to protect one's health pool in this game.

Kite enemies away and fire from a safe distance. Use the seven-directional jump dodge mechanic liberally, and focus on the dinosaur's strike patterns. Additionally, it's even possible to jump dodge while healing, which players will have to do in the heat of battle.

7 Prioritize Kills

Players will quickly find out that the dinosaurs aren't all just brainless pixels in need of a good assault rifle spray. There are specific kinds meant to draw out fights and do annoying poke damage and crowd control.

Prioritize the Watchers (pictured above) first, since their main purpose is to call more dinosaurs to the fight, which can cause the party to get overwhelmed pretty quickly. After that, it's best to go for the Spitters to eliminate the ranged threat that can do devastating damage over time.

6 Dinosaurs Are Resistant to Their Element

Weapons have tons of great customization in this game, from SMGs to mini-guns. Players can eventually add elemental attacks to them like poison, electrical, and fire to spice up the dino slaughter.

It's important to remember, though, that some dinosaurs are mutated with those same elements and will end up being extremely resistant when attacked by weapons of the same type. Avoid equipping multiple weapons featuring the exact same element, especially on solo runs.

5 Farm Higher Difficulty Areas

Higher difficulty areas are an intimidating grind, but when playing with a well-coordinated and well-equipped squad, it is more than worth it. Investing time in such high-risk zones will yield those coveted item and resource bonuses.

Always aim to achieve five-star rankings on missions as well, because this is the only way to get platinum and diamond level upgrades. Again, it's not something that can be achieved very quickly, so players should be prepared for some long slogs.

4 Master a Hero

The different characters are not just cosmetic, they each have their own weapons, abilities, and stats. It's okay to experiment and try them all out, but eventually, players are better off picking one and sticking to it.

Those who are mechanically gifted, for example, should main Ortega because her kit focuses so much on pumping out DPS from her main weapon. Every character has awesome potential for this team-based game, and it's up to the player to bring it out of them.

3 Play Rosy for Solo Runs

Not everybody likes to play games with others, which is understandable, but that puts a serious limit on the potential of the Second Extinction experience. If this is the case, though, Rosy is the hero with the best shot of making it through the dino horde.

She has an active buff for health regeneration and defense, and the largest health pool of any other character in the game. It's also worth mentioning that she is the only character who can access the minigun, which basically turns her into a one-woman army.

2 Play Amir In Co-Op

Amir is the support class, and just like other online multiplayer games, isn't the sexiest class of the bunch; however, the developers made sure to give him some awesome abilities to make playing Amir a rewarding experience.

He can scout areas for enemies giving the squad an invaluable advantage in higher difficulty areas, and call down a "Hammer of Dawn" type orbital strike that turns dinosaurs into instant bbq. Be mindful of his lack of survivability, though, as he has the smallest health pool in the game.

1 Be Versatile With Mission Loadouts

Players and their squads are able to fill a limited number of item loadout slots before getting dropped onto the map, which is a vital part of the survival experience. Co-ordinating these item builds effectively with the team can make or break the success of a mission.

The main advice here is to be flexible, and not fall in love with a favorite loadout at the expense of the best loadout for the team. Be sure to have ammo and equipment drops somewhere in the team's arsenal because supplies will inevitably become problematic in higher difficulty zones.
