In October 2020, Second Extinction dropped on PC to the satisfaction of fans everywhere. This online 3-player co-op shooter was developed and published by the Swedish-based Systemic Reaction, a creative division of Avalanche Studios. In addition to PC, it was released on Xbox One and Xbox Series X on April 28, 2021. Set on a post-apocalyptic Earth overrun by mutated dinosaurs, the player is a part of a team of resistance fighters trying to reclaim the planet from fearsome monsters.

Before jumping onto the battlefield, players choose between four heroes: Jurgen Winter, Rosy Mevoungou, Valentina Ortega, and Amir Wilson. They each have unique abilities and strengths and utilize specific weapons to fend off the swarms of menacing creatures.

Updated June 25, 2022 by Jason Collins: In Second Extinction, each of the four character classes have their weaknesses which players might like to know before taking a deep dive into the game. After all, it's pretty important information to be aware of considering each class has its own particular playstyle.

So, this list has been expanded so fans can learn more about each character's strengths and weaknesses so that they can determine which character suits their gameplay the best. Armed with this information, players stand the best chance of succeeding at everything Second Extinction throws their way.

4 Jurgen Winter, The Trooper

Second Extinction Jurgen

Jurgen Winter's role is the Trooper class. This means he's a sniper and a solid one at that. Jurgen Winter prefers to attack enemies from a far, far-off distance. The shots he takes are perfectly calculated and consistently accurate. So, it's unsurprising that the damage Jurgen Winter inflicts is typically enormous, especially if he hits the correct body part.

Curiously, his Passive Skill is Low Profile, which allows him to become difficult to detect when he has been crouched and left unmoving for a short amount of time. Jurgen also has Satchel Charge, a Tactical Skill in which he employs a sticky explosive that triggers when shot. Moreover, his Special Skill known as Mask Scent lets him drop a vial of pheromones that makes him and his allies undetectable for some time.

While most players prefer the Scout Rifle for Jurgen, he is just as capable of killing enemies when he equips an Assault Rifle or Shotgun. In fact, the skills Jurgen Winter has actually work on the other guns, not just the Scout Rifle.

However, his biggest weakness is that although he is a character that is a 'jack of all trades' thanks to his character class flexibility, he is a master of none. In addition, his satchel charges aren't as effective as they appear because they need to be shot to detonate.

Ultimately, despite these weaknesses, he is a fierce foe when fighting against enormous dinosaurs with heavy armor and mutated beasts since they cannot hunt him (or his allies) down.

3 Rosy Mevoungou, The Enforcer

Second Extinction Rosy

As part of the Enforcer class, Rosy Mevoungou is the tank of this game, specializing in defense. One of her biggest strengths is building electric fences that do an excellent job at keeping enemies out. Unsurprisingly, as part of the enforcer class, she has a heavy (not light!) machine gun for firepower. Boy, oh boy, does this come in handy when she is fighting her way through dangerous dinosaurs.

Interestingly, Rosy Mevoungou has Field Repairs as her Passive Skill, which heals her up a single segment of health upon activation. She also has Static Barricade, a Tactical Skill where she can deploy conductive pylons that make a barrier of electricity between two chosen points. Additionally, Rosy can use Positive Reinforcement, a Special Skill where she compliments the team, thereby restoring some of their health and boosting defenses.

Rosy carries around a Minigun with low damage but a high fire rate. There is also a Shotgun up for grabs that she can operate, which has the opposite (high damage, low fire rate). Yet, perhaps her most significant strength is that she is excellent as a team player. The blockades she erects will not exactly stop dinosaurs, but they will damage them.

Her biggest weakness lies in her skills being a bit slower than the other character choices. Her skills also require more strategic thinking, which can be frustrating for some players, especially those with a quicker play style.

2 Valentina Ortega, The Trooper

Second Extinction Valentina

Valentina Ortega, the game's Trooper class, is incredibly fast and the perfect character for those whose game style is to run around and shoot enemies. That's why she likes to carry heavy weapons so that she can run around and gun enemies down.

Her Passive Skill, Weapon Master, allows Valentina to equip a primary weapon instead of a sidearm (meaning she'll have two primary weapons instead of one). She also has Dash, a Tactical Skill that allows her to leap in any direction quickly, which comes in handy more often than you would think. Additionally, Valentina Ortega can use Combat High, a Special Skill that makes her damage charge up a meter, meaning she has significantly more power when it's filled up completely.

Valentina carries a Shotgun, a Scout Rifle, or an Assault Rifle. The Assault Rifle gives the best of both worlds here. Since she does not need to carry an SMG or Pistol, the Scout Rifle or Shotgun goes in the other hand. Of all the heroes, she is the only one that can actually dodge. Her skills only add to this advantageous mobility.

Unfortunately, her most significant weakness is that she puts herself at risk by carrying two primary weapons. With two primary weapons equipped, she gets into fights without a passive ability which puts her at a greater risk of injury.

1 Amir Wilson, The Operative

Second Extinction Amir

Amir Wilson personifies the Operative class. His entire focus is on recon and lending support to allies. Amir prefers to analyze opponents before outright attacking them, to help himself and his teammates have a better chance of surviving. He can pinpoint where exactly enemies are before they are alerted.

Amir Wilson's Situational Awareness is a Passive Skill that allows him to be aware of enemies that cannot be seen while attacking. His Tactical Skill is Orbital Surveillance, which highlights opponents in a particular range, showing where they are on the map at any given time. His Special Skill Precision Strike also sends down a laser from the ERA Orbital Station, blasting a specific area with an explosion that causes maximum damage to opponents.

As for weapons, Amir carries a Scout Rifle and a Grenade Launcher. The Scout Rifle is a terrifying (although slow) sniper rifle, while the Grenade Launcher is suitable for multiple enemies. His sidearms are an SMG and a Pistol, so he can easily change guns when he needs more mobility. After all, it's always handy to know when and where the dinosaurs are coming from, and Amir's ability to locate and explode them is more than convenient.

However, Amir's biggest weakness is that he has the least amount of health out of all the characters in the game. That's why it's recommended that a skilled player choose Amir because his skill set might not get a chance to be utilized if his low health becomes a problem.

Second Extinction is currently available on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
