Sea of Thieves' recent 2022 preview event pulled back the curtain on a ton of new, upcoming content for the game, including Sea Forts, Adventures, Mysteries, and more. Adventures likely caught the eye of a lot of fans, as players can drastically impact the direction of a Sea of Thieves Adventure through the choices they make. Overall, it’s a very impressive concept, and it’ll be interesting to see how well it works in-game.

Recently, Game Rant sat down with creative director Mike Chapman and executive producer Joe Neate, really diving into this new content. For the Adventures, we talked about the concept of real choice, the fact that Rare doesn’t know when the story will go (because of said choice), the first Sea of Thieves adventures Shrouded Islands, and more. One important question we asked is how these Adventures differ from Tall Tales.

Per Chapman, Adventures have a few different focal points, such as the frequency. Adventures are available for two weeks at a time, taking crudely 45-minutes to an hour to accomplish, and are chapters in an unfolding story. Overall, this focus on cinematic and immersive storytelling also means that fans who thought Adventures sounded like a grindy competition should know it’s not. Length does depend on a few factors, but players do not have to grind in this Sea of Thieves Adventure.

It’s got all of that immersive storytelling quality you’d expect from a Tall Tale,” Chapman said, “but it’s something that, alongside the storytelling, comes with world changes. It’s not you just having this private Tall Tale experience. It's taking place in the world where everyone can see these world changes, and everyone's experiencing that stage of the story together because it's this moment in time as part of the Sea of Thieves' world.”

Finally, one other difference compared to Sea of Thieves' Tall Tales is that there are new character animations, new voiceover, new voiced cutscenes, and new music—really designed to bring that immersive story feeling to each and every Adventure.

Players will be able to experience themselves soon with the first Adventure in Sea of Thieves, Shrouded Islands, where players must investigate a new fog that has covered the Golden Sands Outpost, physically warping and changing the location for everyone in the world to see. Sea of Thieves Season 6 is currently slated for March 2022.

Sea of Thieves is available on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
