Rare's online multiplayer, swashbuckling adventure game Sea of Thieves will be receiving a free update called Ships of Fortune on April 22nd. The update seems to be largely focused on Sea of Thieves's PvP combat, though other changes and additions are coming as well.

Perhaps most eye-catching addition to the game is the introduction of cats, which will be owned by players. These feline companions will have the ability to follow players on their naval journeys, be held and pet, fall asleep on deck, and seemingly dress up in a variety of costumes, all themed around piracy.

In addition, the game's playerbase will have the ability to become an Emissary for various Trading Companies, allowing access to certain cosmetics and aiding in gaining reputation, with the cap on reputation being increased with the update. A new Trading Company, The Reaper's Bones will also be added, focusing on PvP. With this theme of PvP, a player revival system will be implemented, and the Arena will be made much more aggressive by replacing treasure maps with a single beacon, while cutting the game's time limit by nine minutes. As always, new cosmetic items and emotes will be added to the game with the update.

Players across platforms who favor PvP as their preferred form of play should hopefully find a lot to love in the new update. And for all the pacifists of the high seas on the other hand, there's always the cats wearing pirate hats.

Sea of Thieves is currently available on PC and Xbox One.
