Sea of Thieves development continues with Rare making significant updates to the pirate game month-to-month. But Sea of Thieves is expanding in more ways than just offering new content. Sea of Thieves is no longer exclusive to the Microsoft Store on PC, as it can now be purchased and played from Steam.

The Steam release of Sea of Thieves has full parity with the game as it's currently available on Xbox One and through the Microsoft store. Rare has also confirmed that Sea of Thieves on Steam will receive all of the same free content updates as they're released. Even more exciting is that Sea of Thieves on Steam is fully cross-play compatible with the other platforms.

Sea of Thieves did recently add microtransactions to the game, along with a premium currency called Ancient Coins. These coins can be spent at the in-game Pirate Emporium, which sells a variety of cosmetics, pet companions, emotes, and more. It's weird to think Rare was holding back a Steam release so they could introduce microtransactions first, but that does seem to be the case.

Steam users can pick up Sea of Thieves right now, with the full game retailing for $39.99, and it's already climbed to the #1 position on Steam's top-selling games chart. As ever, Sea of Thieves can also be played with an Xbox Game Pass for PC subscription, though that still requires players to use the Microsoft Store version of the game.

Sea of Thieves is available now on PC and Xbox One.
