Sea of Thieves is no stranger to the live-service model. With fairly frequent updates over the years, including some new story content, fresh cosmetics, and a battle pass system, Sea of Thieves shares more than one aspect of the live-service genre. But with Rare's recent announcement of brand-new modes, this live-service model is going to be used more than ever.

As part of its 2022 roadmap, Rare announced that Sea of Thieves would be receiving a whole host of new content. Along with Sea Forts, ongoing Mysteries, and more cosmetic rewards, a new game mode called "Adventures" is also coming to the game in the next few weeks. Adventures should excite long-time fans and give newcomers a reason to check out the game if they haven't before.

Detailing What a Sea of Thieves Adventure Is

Sea of Thieves' brand-new Adventures are designed to be story-focused content that will be gradually added to the game over time. Each new Adventure will likely feature a brief cinematic that details the plot and characters that are integral to the story being told.

Each Adventure in Sea of Thieves is going to be like a chapter in a book, with the narrative evolving over time through each new Adventure. Each Adventure will release on a monthly basis and will last just two weeks, which will help to keep players invested, but does mean that some players may end up missing out on an important story detail if they don't have the chance to play through the Adventure within the time limit.

Over the course of the next few months, as more Adventures are released, new characters will be added to the story. It seems as though Adventures are finally going to focus on Sea of Thieves' lore, which has been in the game for years but has never really reached its full potential.

As the narrative begins to wrap up, Rare will release one final "Special Adventure," which acts as a culmination and conclusion for all the plot threads of the previous Adventures. Rare has mentioned that these Special Adventures may end in a final decision, where Sea of Thieves players must choose between several options presented to them. Apparently, these player choices will then affect the game's overworld, with outposts and islands taking on a new appearance or functionality depending on what the majority of players voted for.

What The Shrouded Islands Adventure Will Be About

Sea of Thieves Outpost

The first Adventure being brought to Sea of Thieves is called "The Shrouded Islands," and will focus on the Golden Sands Outpost being surrounded by an ominous fog. Upon arriving in the Outpost, players will quickly realize that the settlement's inhabitants have all disappeared. It's up to the player and their crew to solve the mystery and rescue the Outpost's inhabitants.

According to a Senior Designer at Rare, these Adventures have been specifically designed to forge an emotional connection between the player and the characters and locations of Sea of Thieves. Hopefully, the Shrouded Islands Adventure will do just that, and will make players care about the missing NPCs of Golden Sands.

The Shrouded Islands' Release Date

Sea of Thieves Flameheart Lore

Sea of Thieves' Shrouded Islands Adventure is dropping a little earlier than the game's Season 6 update, as it is coming to Xbox consoles and PC on February 17, 2022. To start the Adventure, players will likely just need to sit through the opening cinematic and head over to Golden Sands Outpost. Following on from Shrouded Islands, fans should expect to see another Adventure in about a month's time, although the name and content of the upcoming Adventure has not been officially confirmed yet.

Sea of Thieves is now available for PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
