Rare intends to make 2022 the biggest year yet for Sea of Thieves, recently revealing a roadmap for future seasons, new content like Adventures and Mysteries, and a new approach focusing on community and bringing the world of Sea of Thieves to life. Indeed, it’s an ambitious goal, but it seems Rare is up to the challenge.

Game Rant recently spoke with creative director Mike Chapman and executive produce Joe Neate regarding this new content and future plans for 2022. Sometimes, the best way to know what comes next is to reflect on what came before, and so we asked if Sea of Thieves players could expect any new Pirates of the Caribbean-level crossovers this year.

As many may recall, A Pirate’s Life brought in Captain Jack Sparrow to protect the Sea of Thieves from Davy Jones, introducing a campaign through 5 Tall Tales, new locations, new enemy types, new Pirate Emporium Sets, and more. It was a huge announcement for Rare and Sea of Thieves, and it saw many players flock back en masse—especially because it was free.

Chapman described A Pirate’s Life as a “chance of a lifetime” and remarked how great it was to work together the Sea of Thieves world and Pirates of the Caribbean. He noted how the parallels played perfectly in terms of the morality of the worlds, the meaning behind “The Sea of Thieves,” and how they contrasted all authentically. “It was an amazing experience to partner with Disney and work on all that,” Chapman said.

Chapman also added that, as Rare pitched A Pirate’s Life to Disney, Rare had other ideas for where the story could go and how those could be brought into Sea of Thieves. A Pirate’s Life, as Chapman described, “was an incredibly inspiring experience.” Chapman would say that there’s nothing to confirm in regard to any future Pirates of the Caribbean-level crossovers, but he didn’t completely strike it out either. In his own words,

[A Pirate’s Life] is one of those magic moments that we won't soon forget. But yeah, so it is a possibility, but nothing to confirm at the moment.

While it remains to be seen when, or if, Sea of Thieves players get treated to another A Pirate’s Life experience, Rare has constantly pushed the envelope in expanding its world. With Season 6 and beyond, with the new Adventures and new Mysteries, and new content yet to be announced, it seems Rare will keep pushing that envelope, and everyone wins in that case.

Sea of Thieves is available now on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
