Rare's Sea of Thieves has maintained a steady following as it transitioned to a seasonal model and an upcoming update is bringing even more to the pirate simulator. During the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase, Rare confirmed several new additions for Sea of Thieves coming with Season 7 later this year.

Season 6 of Sea of Thieves was released in March, and it came with the expected Tall Tales, new raids, and tons of customization options. Just like Season 6, Sea of Thieves players can expect more Tall Tales with the release of Season 7 and cosmetics to make their pirate and ship appear more unique, but for the first time, Sea of Thieves players will be able to captain their own ship. Since the early days of Sea of Thieves, players could become a Pirate Legend by grinding experience for the game's three factions, but Season 7 adds the new captain status which comes with its own benefits.

Sea of Thieves received a trailer for Season 7 during the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase that revealed multiple things coming to the game on July 21. Some features Rare confirmed during the Season 7 trailer included the aforementioned ability to become captain and the ability for captains to customize the Captain's Cabin of a ship and save ship loadouts. A Sea of Thieves captain will also be able to name their ship in Season 7, with a nameplate appearing on the ship's crest above the Captain's Cabin entrance.

Because Sea of Thieves is already available through Xbox Game Pass, subscribers who haven't experienced the pirate simulator will be able to gain some experience ahead of Season 7's July release. There won't be enough time for new players to complete the Season 6 content, but currency can be earned toward unlocking ship customizations necessary for a pirate captain. The release of Season 7 in July also brings with it a currency called cash-in points, which joins others like doubloons which stack separately from gold that's earned by completing voyages.

Although Sea of Thieves Tall Tales have become a staple of each season, it's currently unclear what players can expect from new Tall Tales, but unique rewards were teased during the trailer. Many players responding to the Sea of Thieves Season 7 trailer have stated that they've wanted the upcoming changes for a long time and are anticipating the July release. Rare Studios confirmed Sea of Thieves has reached over 30 million players and the release of Season 7 may introduce even more to the game.

Sea of Thieves is available now for PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
