Since its surprise announcement at Xbox and Bethesda's E3 2021 showcase, Sea of Thieves: A Pirate's Life couldn't have arrived any sooner. The crossover between Sea of Thieves and Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean is one that players have wanted for a while now. Season 3 officially kicks off today, meaning that many players are already sailing the high seas alongside the notorious Captain Jack Sparrow.

Sea of Thieves is already known for being a bombastic pirate game, meshing well with the hilarious antics of Captain Jack Sparrow himself. What makes the Season 3 update even cooler is that Jack Sparrow is a fully functioning crewmate. Solo players can expect a lot of help from Jack as he can load cannons, aid in searching for treasure on land, and do it all while offering a compelling Sparrow-like commentary on island names. It's so convincing that some players are wondering who plays Jack Sparrow in A Pirate's Life.

Who Plays Jack Sparrow in Sea of Thieves?

Giving Jack Sparrow an authentic feel was, of course, the utmost importance for Rare in properly honoring the character. In A Pirate's Life, technically, more than one person is behind the character of Jack Sparrow. In creating the character, Rare first recruited Jared Butler, the voice actor for Sparrow in previous Pirates of the Caribbean games and Kingdom Hearts 3. Then, they brought in a stunt double from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies to re-enact Johnny Depp's exact mannerisms and facial expressions in full make-up.

It was a little expected that Johnny Depp wouldn't have been recruited to play one of his most iconic roles. Depp is still dealing with his defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife Amber Heard, leading Disney to part ways with the acclaimed actor concerning Depp's role as Jack Sparrow. Still, the gameplay footage that has been shown so far has been noted for being quite an authentic adaptation of Sparrow, with some noting that he looks a lot less like Depp.

That's not all that Rare did to stay true to the spirit of Pirates of the Caribbean games. A Pirate's Life also introduces Sea of Thieves players to the great ship known as the Black Pearl. It's called Eternal Freedom, and even though it's locked behind tons of Ancient Coins, it offers a look that fans will undoubtedly recognize from the Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise. That's not to mention familiar faces like Captain Barbossa, Joshamee Gibbs, and the deadly Davy Jones.

Sea of Thieves: A Pirate's Life is available now on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
