[Update 1: Rare has clarified its Death Costs statement in Sea of Thieves' Release Notes, saying that it "never intended to charge players for PvP related deaths, as we understand the negative impact this would have on the player experience.” The original story continues below.]

When looking at current games, players have seen a lot of in-game currency come and go for various purposes and reasons. In the latest Sea of Thieves update, players might now see their gold taken away due to Death Costs.

In the most recent update for Sea of Thieves, the game developer Rare has announced that respawn costs are coming to the game. At the moment, dying and respawning in game takes nothing more than the player’s time. Once a player dies, they will have to take a trip on the Ferry of the Damned and nothing else. However, this will all change soon, but Rare has not announced when this update will go live.

However, if players check the "Coming Updates" portion of the release notes for Sea of Thieves, they will find the introduction of a Death Cost, which states that “the Captain of the Ferry of the Damned [will] deduct a small gold fee when [players] die.” Hopefully this update will come into play after Rare gets a handle on the gold reward and reputation system and get that up to speed.

Rare has not stated how much this Death Cost will be, but they do say that “rates are dependent on the cause of death, so the more avoidable the death, the less patience the Captain will have.” One could assume that these rates are dependent on how much a player is worth, and players will pay a percentage per that worth upon respawn. One could also imagine that a death by gun or blunderbuss is going to be a lighter tax than say drowning or falling off a high place. But these two theories are just that – theories – so take them with a grain of salt.

This update does not seem to be going over well with fans, who are already underwhelmed with the Kraken's design. Players have also faced issues with spawn-camping in Sea of Thieves, so adding a Death Cost could make players think twice about playing the game or spending their money on it altogether.

Since Sea of Thieves' launch, players have encountered a lot of issues with the game, and this just seems to be adding to the list that only looks to be getting longer. Hopefully with some time and a lot of feedback from these past couple weeks, Rare can get the game exactly where it needs to be and players can continue to enjoy the game.

Sea of Thieves is available now for PC and Xbox One.
