Sea of Thieves gained a lot of attention when it announced a crossover with Pirates of the Caribbean that included an entire unique story featuring Jack Sparrow. The crossover event came from seemingly out of nowhere, and was a real treat for Sea of Thieves and Pirates of the Caribbean fans, especially since it was entirely free for players. The crossover was largely well received by players and critics, and raised the question of whether Sea of Thieves would continue to offer exciting crossovers.
That question was answered today as Sea of Thieves revealed a new Borderlands crossover event. The Borderlands crossover is much smaller than the Pirate of Thieves one, with its highlight being a Borderlands-themed ship complete with a pirate Claptrap on its mast. However, it does seem to show that the game is interested in pursuing more crossovers with other properties, and that video game franchises are possibilities beyond massive movie series. There is no way of knowing what future crossovers the game will host, but there are some video games that would make great options.
Sea of Thieves Should Cross Over With The Elder Scrolls

The Elder Scrolls is one of the biggest western RPG franchises in the industry, and it just so happens to be owned by Xbox. The series would be perfect for a Sea of Thieves crossover event for a multitude of reasons. One of these is just how unique of a setting The Elder Scrolls has. There are a lot of different elements that Sea of Thieves could pull from The Elder Scrolls including themed items, islands based on locations in the series, different races for pirates, weapons, or even a variety of pets. The story for the event could even see the series' iconic Oblivion Gates opening up in Sea of Thieves for players to come together and close.
The event would also make a lot of sense from a marketing standpoint. Obviously, crossover events are meant to attract new players to both of the involved series, as well as give existing players something fun to interact with. This could work well for both games, especially if the crossover was timed with either an Elder Scrolls Online expansion or the eventual release of The Elder Scrolls 6. The event could also bring a lot of unique content to the game, such as a ship based on The Elder Scrolls' elusive Dwemer race.
Sea of Thieves Should Cross Over With Viva Pinata
Another title owned by Xbox that would be great for a full Sea of Thieves crossover is Viva Pinata. Also developed by Rare, Viva Pinata sees players developing a garden for pinata to come to hang out and grow. The series saw two main releases on Xbox 360, as well as a party game spin-off, but has been dormant ever since. Despite that, the game has a devoted community among Rare fans, and a crossover would be a great way to honor them. While Rare has hinted at future Sea of Thieves crossovers with Disney properties, taking time to honor the studio's own history in the industry more would be great for fans of the studio and new players alike.
Sea of Thieves has featured items from Viva Pinata in the past, but there is still a lot more potential for a bigger crossover that brings new modes and items to the game. The game already has a brightly colored Viva Pinata ship that looks great in Sea of Thieves' art style, but a full crossover could bring features like transporting Pinata to different gardens spread out across islands. This could be a great way to add some new activities and areas to the game that stand out from others already present. The event could even have players hunt down a new form of Sea of Thieves' Megalodon enemy by introducing a pinata variant that can give players some unique rewards for hunting it down.
Sea of Thieves Should Cross Over With Assassin's Creed: Black Flag
Perhaps one of the most obvious potential crossovers is Assassin's Creed: Black Flag. Black Flag released in 2013 and is still considered one of the best entries in the series. The game was also released at a time when pirate-themed video games were not common, and Assassin's Creed: Black Flag has been hailed as one of the best pirate games in the industry. This would make a crossover with the game great for Sea of Thieves, as many fans of Black Flag would likely check out the pirate MMO just to get their hands on some assassin gear or run through a storyline starring Connor Kenway.
The crossover event could also bring some cool new features to Sea of Thieves, such as potential assassination missions or Assassin's Creed gear like a hidden blade or assassin outfit. The crossover event could also be used as marketing for Assassin's Creed, whether it be for a future pirate-themed game or a possible remaster of Black Flag that many fans have been hoping for. The event could even be used as a promotion for Ubisoft's future pirate game Skull and Bones, and could include some new content from that game to help attract Black Flag players to the new game as well. Either way, Sea of Thieves would be a great place for some new Black Flag content, especially if the MMO approaches it with a more light-hearted tone that could be refreshing for the game's setting.
Hopefully players will get some more news on what lies in the future for Sea of Thieves soon. The game has come a long way after its original release, and it doesn't seem like Rare is planning on slowing down anytime soon. The game has adopted a seasonal model that has brought significant updates, and it will be great to see what else eventually gets added. Until then, there is the Borderlands crossover event for players to try out, and there are still plenty of secrets in Sea of Thieves that most players have yet to find.
