Sea of Stars is the next project from Sabotage Studio, the developers behind the indie hit The Messenger. For this next outing, the team is shifting genres. Looking to emulate the classic turn-based RPGs of the 90s, Sea of Stars is also looking to tap some of the talent from that era.

Many indie titles take their inspiration from classic games that developers likely played in the days of their youth. Video game history is filled with landmark titles that remain pillars of excellence, and Sabotage is looking at the timeless classic Chrono Trigger as a game it wishes to emulate with this latest project.

Sea of Stars shares a lot with the beloved Square Enix RPG, and now the game shares a composer, as Yasunori Mitsuda joins its development team. The extent of Mitsuda's contribution is not known at this time, but he will be contributing to the soundtrack alongside previously announced composer Eric W. Brown who worked for Sabotage on The Messenger.

Mitsuda was the primary composer on Chrono Trigger, a game that's still considered one of the best RPGs to this day. In a statement posted on the game's Kickstarter, Mitsuda said "without knowing exactly why, 'I want to write music for this game' was the feeling I had while seeing it convey the nostalgic golden age of the 90s."

Indie games that find that perfect niche can become huge success stories. Major players are taking notice, and as a result, are game to promote indie titles more than ever. The Messenger's team has proved it can deliver a quality product, and adding a legendary composer like Mitsuda only makes Sea of Stars look even more appealing.

Sea of Stars is in development with an expected release in 2022 on PC and consoles.
