With the exciting news that Dermot Mulroney has joined the Scream 6 cast, fans of the slasher franchise are curious about what kind of character he will play. All fans know that is that he will be a cop, so audiences will have to wait until March 2023 to find out more. With Neve Campbell not returning for the sixth Scream movie, it seems like Mulroney's character could have ties to Sidney Prescott, which would be a way for the franchise to still feel connected to this iconic final girl. But it's also possible that Mulroney will play someone who has zero ties to any character and who is brand new.

While there's still a long wait before Scream 6 hits theaters, it's hard not to be curious about what role Dermot Mulroney will play. It will be interesting to see a famous actor become part of this beloved franchise.

Dermot Mulroney is best known for appearing in romantic comedies like My Best Friend's Wedding (1997) and Must Love Dogs (2005), but the actor has also delved into the horror genre. Mulroney played Bobby Sheridan in The Purge TV series and also appeared as creepy father Henry Tooms in the 2018 episode of the Blumhouse TV horror series Into The Dark called "Flesh and Blood." Mulroney also appeared in Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015). When thinking about what Mulroney's role will be like in the new Scream film, it's interesting to think about the cops who have appeared in the franchise so far.

There have been two notable and memorable police officers working in Woodsboro. Dewey Riley's Scream (2022) death was a mistake, as David Arquette's character has been such a solid and meaningful part of the franchise. Dewey is incredibly kind and treats friends and peers like family once he has gotten to know them. Marley Shelton's character, Judy Hicks, is as sweet, naive, and innocent as Dewey, and the two share many personality traits.

Since Dewey and Judy have taken on the role of the sweet, friendly officer who do their best to protect the town but sometimes seem pretty innocent, it seems likely that Dermot Mulroney's character will be different. It's possible that he will be tough, confident, and even conceited, which will still allow Scream 6 to deal with common horror tropes, something that audiences are used to seeing in this horror franchise. Maybe he'll think that he can solve the mystery of Ghostface right away and that he's so much smarter than everyone else but will actually be one of the first minor characters to get killed.

Perhaps Dermot Mulroney's character will have a connection to previous Scream characters. Maybe he knows Sidney's dad Neil (Lawrence Hecht) or used to work with Dewey and Judy. Since it seems that Scream 6 will take place outside of Woodsboro, maybe Mulroney will live in a big city and that is where the new Ghostface will star their killing spree.

It would be fun to see Dermot Mulroney's character become friends with Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox). Now that Cox is the only original actor who is coming back for Scream 6, Gale will be a final girl character, it would make sense for Mulroney and Cox to act together in several scenes. Gale will need a new friend and ally since she won't be sharing the screen with Sidney or Dewey. Maybe Gale will want to honor Dewey's memory by helping Mulroney's character.

While it seems unlikely that Mulroney would be a love interest for Gale, since she's still mourning the loss of Dewey, it does seem possible for them to bond over fighting Ghostface. Since many of the younger characters from the fifth film are returning for the sixth one, Gale will want to connect with someone a bit closer to her age who she can relate to more.

With Jenna Ortega's comments about Scream 6's "most violent Ghostface yet," fans are definitely curious about Mulroney's place in the franchise. One thing is for sure: Mulroney's cop will definitely be a well-crafted character with some interesting backstory, since Dewey and Judy were richly drawn people. Fans got to know Dewey's kindness well, along with his long-term relationship with Gale and the sad troubles that they experienced between Scream 4 and Scream (2022). Judy was also shown to be a sweet parent to Wes (Dylan Minnette) and a loyal friend and colleague. The character might also be hilarious, whether or not he's trying to be funny, since the Scream movies are often more funny than scary.

No matter what kind of character Dermot Mulroney plays, his presence in Scream 6 has gotten people talking and has created even more excitement and anticipation for the new film.
