Horror game Scorn is letting three lucky fans have a creepy custom 3D-printed Xbox controller via a week-long giveaway event on the Xbox One Reddit page. The giveaway comes in light of the game’s debut on Xbox Series X. So far Scorn has received mixed reviews. However, fans have nothing but positive feedback for the design of the controller and giveaway overall.First announced in 2014, Scorn is a first-person horror game featuring an open-world environment with various connected regions for the player to explore. The unsettling environment and labyrinth-like levels found in Scorn feature a Giger-inspired aesthetic. Hype put the game on the map after it was featured at the Xbox Series X showcase event in 2020. Gamers were intrigued by the surrealism of the environment and body horror aspects the game appeared to offer, echoing fun qualities found in fan-favorite horror franchises such as Resident Evil and Dead Space.Ebb Software and Kepler Interactive commissioned the custom controllers to be designed by artist POPeArt with production done by Defy Gaming, a company known for making beautiful and wild-colored controllers for various gaming consoles. The collaboration between the two creatives led to a gruesome yet awesomely designed controller featuring a “bone and blood” aesthetic as found in the body horror-filled game.
The Scorn event gives fans multiple chances to enter the giveaway, including an identical thread on the Xbox Series X Reddit page. The event’s rules are for accounts that have accumulated 100 karma and are older than three months. Multiple comments in the parent comments will lead to disqualification. It was stated that these conditions were in place to prevent cheating by bots and duplicate entries. There’s also a Scorn-themed user flair Reddit users can claim for a limited time. Other goodies will be given out as well, with the Reddit post ending with the text: “We aren’t done there. Look for other surprises throughout the week.”
The first thing players will notice is that the inspiration for the environment is obviously H.R. Giger, or the guy behind the weirdly beautiful and completely gross aesthetic of the Alien franchise. The biomechanical body horror of the weaponry in the game could be something straight out of Cronenberg’s Videodrome. These visual horror aspects of the game seem to garner the majority of the praise. However, there have been many negative reviews about the characters and world-building elements of the story. Scorn reviews have been mixed, but horror gamers can try it out for themselves at little cost thanks to Xbox Game Pass.
