Serbian developer Ebb Software has released a new gameplay showcase for its upcoming horror FPS Scorn. The footage is taken on an Xbox Series X and shows off the next-gen graphics capabilities and drops players into an unknown world made up of a grotesque organic environment filled with deformed creatures. Based on the trailer, Scorn combines elements of horror, puzzles, and an immersive environment to produce a unique experience.

When creating Scorn, Ebb Software said it wanted to focus on creating characters, weapons, and environments that are intertwined. The ideas and art style for Scorn derive from the works of Polish artist Zdzislaw Beksinski and Swiss artist H.R. Giger, who famously has worked on the Alien franchise and the Dark Seed video games. Both artists are well known for their biomechanical style and nightmarish environments.

Seconds into the gameplay trailer, fans can see the European artists' influence. Every aspect of the game looks alive, including the doors, walls, and the weapons that are made from bones and flesh. The movements of grotesque creatures and organic matter in the environment is captured beautifully with Xbox Series X ray-tracing and 4K resolution. Scorn will also run at 60 FPS on Xbox Series X, which means that every interaction and movement should be smooth.

Throughout the Scorn trailer, the humanoid character interacts with the environment by opening door, obtaining weapons, and solving puzzles. Each of these interactions shows off the mysterious connection between the character and the seemingly living environment. The character also changes weapons in the trailer, showing off biomechanical attachments that can be ripped from the handle and replaced, and while loading the weapon, the character is shown to be ripping glowing pods from a living creature.

The 13-minute showcase does not reveal any plotline or explanation of the character and environment, which is most likely Ebb Software's intent. Ebb Software developers have said the design of the game revolves around being thrown into an unknown world, and that the unsettling environment serves as its own character shrouded in mystery. Not many details about the main character have been revealed, other than they are a skinless humanoid, which can be seen briefly in the Xbox Series X trailer.

Scorn was first announced in 2014 and after a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2017, the horror FPS title was confirmed as an Xbox Series X exclusive in May 2020. Now, it is expected that Scorn will release in 2021 and according to the trailer, will also be available on PC and Xbox Game Pass.

Scorn is expected to release in 2021 on PC and Xbox Series X/S.
