There are several video games that were made after a TV show or movie, even a book series like The Witcher, Dune, and Star Wars. Depicting the same story in a new way such as video games not only allows fans to dive into these fantasy worlds to find more lore but helps flesh out some of the characters that may not have been touched on in the past. It’s a chance to find a new way to talk about a storyline or find new ones entirely.

Some science fiction video games are well-known for being created from a book series, but there are others that might be surprising to find where its inspiration is from. This list shows some of the video games that have been made in reference to a book.

6 Metro 2033

This sci-fi horror first-person shooter is based on Dmitry Glukhovsky’s novel sharing the same name. Survivors of a nuclear war have gone into the Metro tunnels of Moscow where dangerous humans and mutants roam freely. Players must explore the area as well as save his home from the dangers in the Metro tunnels.

Radiation is covering most of the area, so players will need to wear a gas mask as well as use their flashlight to see the area. The mask can be damaged during combat, so not only is the player trying to survive the many fights that creep up, but the potential danger of radiation that seeps in. There are well hidden moral choices throughout Metro 2033 that could potentially cause different endings.

5 The Binding Of Isaac

The Binding of Isaac’s storyline is based off a Hebrew Bible story in Genesis 22 with the same name. A kid, Isaac, and his mother live peacefully on a hill. When the mother hears a “voice from above” that her son is corrupted and full of sin and is told to save him, the mother works hard to rid Isaac of anything that may corrupt him, even his clothes.

And when the voice orders the mother to kill her son, she complies and attempts to harm him, however, Isaac escapes through a trapdoor, where the game ultimately begins. According to the Hebrew Bible, the story does not have a mother, but instead Abraham, who God commands to kill his son, Isaac, as the sacrifice. Abraham begins to comply, but then sees a ram that he uses as the sacrifice instead of Isaac.

4 Neuromancer

Loosely based on William Gibson’s novel in 1984 with the same name, Neuromancer is an adventure video games released in 1988. Players would be able to interact with a fictional “real world” of Chiba City, Japan, and cyberspace that was represented by a 3D grid like design. Different locations in Chiba City led to different grid sectors.

Players would attempt to infiltrate Intrusion Countermeasure Electronics, or ICE, so they could gain access to the database where they could face A.I.s that hide there. When gaining entry, the player must uncover the truth behind the disappearance of one of his friends.

3 Call Of Cthulhu: Dark Corners Of The Earth

A short story sharing the same name written by H.P. Lovecraft inspired the video game Call of Cthulhu. It was first published in the pulp magazine, Weird Tales, in 1928, where Lovecraft was inspired by some dreams he had, and thus, turned into a game.

This RPG survival horror game is set in 1924 Boston, where a private investigator, Edward Pierce, suffers from nightmares. When uncovering mysteries of the Hawkins family, Pierce starts to understand that the death of the family might have been something bigger than he initially suspected.

2 Conan Exiles

Conan the Barbarian was brought to fantasy lovers by Robert E. Howard, a hero that originated in pulp magazines but soon was adapted to books, comics, films, table-top RPG games and video games. Conan Exiles is an open-world survival game where Conan, who is in exile, must survive the harsh lands covered in dangerous creatures to fight off.

Grow and hunt for food, build a shelter, harvest resources and craft items to help last through the days. Players can go at this alone or work together to build settlements and strongholds to withstand any invasion. Players can even come together to wage war on other settlements to take over their land. There are many activities that can be done in the game, giving players full control of their own story.

1 Assassins Creed

While Assassin’s Creed has it’s own book series based around the video game, the original inspiration that created this adaption was from a novel published in 1938 by Vladmir Blatol called Alamut. The book is inspiration, however, it does not follow the plot entirely.

The novel follows a fortress with the same name, where a self-proclaimed Prophet is working to rule the region with elite fighters at his side. The elite fighters could also be inspiration for the group of assassins, although, it is mentioned that the assassin group is inspired by the Hashashins, who originated in 1094 in Syria. This science fiction, historical video game took bits and pieces of history and created a wonderful game that is still popular to this day.
