The first trailer for the Apple TV+ series Schmigadoon has been released offering a glimpse at the colorful musical-comedy. The trailer highlights the show's unique and exciting premise while also giving a glimpse at the star-studded cast who will bring this charming story to life.

As Apple TV+ hopes to become a bigger name in the streaming game, the release of this trailer will likely get a lot of people curious. The show stars Cecily Strong and Keegan Michael-Key as a couple whose relationship is in a funk. While hiking through the woods, they come across a magical and musical town only to find out they are trapped there. The only way of escaping is by finding true love.

The trailer shows off the colorful and vibrant look of this magical place while also showing the high production values of the musical numbers. The show looks to be paying homage to the musical genre while also poking fun at their tropes. It also makes clear the relationship drama at the center of the song and dance numbers will be a big focus for the show.

Schmigadoon! is co-created by Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio with Paul also serving as showrunner and writer of the show's original songs. Men in Black director Barry Sonnenfeld will direct and produce alongside Saturday Night Live boss Lorne Michaels. Along with Strong and Michael-Key, the show will star Alan Cummings, Fred Armisen, Kristin Chenoweth, and Martin Short. The first season will consist of six episodes released weekly with the first two premiering on July 16, 2021.

Musicals have been notoriously difficult to pull off in the television format with notable flops like Cop Rock and Viva Laughlin. However, the fact that this show is fully leaning into the meta-commentary of musicals could help it set itself apart in the genre. There is also no denying that the cast of this show is incredible and will no doubt bring an added spark to this adventure.

It is especially nice to see Cecily Strong getting the opportunity to step into the spotlight in this lead role. She has been one of the best things on SNL for years but that hasn't led to many projects outside of the show. The talent behind the camera is clear as well with Sonnenfeld adding a Wizard of Oz element. It will also be interesting to see how much this show will be accessible to audiences who are not particularly familiar with the world of musical theater. Still, that subject matter mixed with an intriguing relationship story provides a lot of potential for the show.

Schmigadoon! premieres on Apple TV+ on July 16, 2021.
