Announced at The Game Awards in 2018, Scavengers is an online competitive shooter currently in development by Washington-based game studio Midwinter Entertainment. The game promises a free-to-play action experience, a hybrid of sandbox PVE and class-based PVP.

During The Game Awards 2020, Scavengers reappeared with a new game trailer announcing that the PC closed beta has officially begun, and Midwinter is opening up 50,000 slots for new players. The closed beta is scheduled to run from December 10-21 and will end at 5 pm PST. It will take place through Steam, and selected testers will receive a key before the next Scavengers play test begins.

Participants of the Scavengers closed beta test will not be permitted to live stream, record, or share any gameplay footage, although Midwinter plans to open up streaming of the game at a later date, undoubtedly when the game is more polished. And as with most video game betas, any progress made will not be saved or transferred to the Scavengers final release.

In Scavengers, an asteroid has shattered the Moon and the aftermath has resulted in an Earth transformed into a frozen wasteland. With the asteroid came a virus, giving rise to mutants called the Scourge, and human marauders scavenge, pillage, and terrorize in an attempt to control the land. A few survivors have gone underground to a place called Sanctuary, watched over by an AI protector known as Mother. But Mother wants humans to return to the surface to fight for the survival of their race.

Squads of three players must outwit and outfight other squads in Scavengers, all while contending with the adverse conditions on Earth’s surface. Players will scavenge resources to keep hunger at bay, struggle to survive deadly ice storms, and of course fight off bands of marauders and infected mutants. While battling with the environment, each squad of players will be simultaneously planning one another’s downfall.

While trying to survive in the post-apocalyptic wasteland, players will be tasked with capturing the most datapoints, completing seasonal objectives, and staying alive. Players will be able to track foes through the snow, set enemy AI against rival squads, and use vehicles to either run away or run down opponents. Scavengers will feature a variety of game modes, weapons, enemies, maps, customizable characters and loadouts, as well as blueprints for crafting even deadlier weapons.

Scavengers is currently in development for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
