A new trailer has been unveiled, which teases the creepy upcoming indie survival game Saturnalia, as well as its release date of October 27. Over the last few years, the indie horror scene has exploded with some fantastic titles. Such examples include the P.T.-inspired Visage, the more pixelated Lone Survivor, as well as the onslaught of cooperative spooky games, such as Phasmophobia and Devour. For those who like their games with an element of terror, there are so many to choose from, and Santa Ragione's upcoming release seems like it will fit right in.
There have been a number of trailers shown off for Saturnalia already. It was originally scheduled to come out in 2021. However, this deadline was not met, so the game was pushed back to this year. The title is described as a survival horror with roguelike elements. The story is inspired by the folklore of Sardinia, which is where the game's name comes from, and players will take on the role of four characters as they make their way through the labyrinthine roads of the village. What's unique about this upcoming release is that the game world will physically change each time a character dies, making no two playthroughs the same.
The new trailer confirms that Saturnalia will be launching on October 27, right on schedule for Halloween. The game will be coming to PS4 and PS5, Xbox Series consoles, Switch, and PC. It will also be an exclusive title on the Epic Games Store, which sadly means that Steam users won't be able to get hold of it unless they also have an account with Epic. The new trailer itself gives off a certain vibe, with occult-like imagery, a darkly upbeat soundtrack, and a visual style that looks quite different.
At a cursory glance, the graphics for the game make it look a bit like the hand-drawn art style of Mundaun, which was released in March 2021. That particular indie title was noteworthy for its aesthetics, and the developer of Mundaun, Michel Ziegler, put a lot of effort into physically drawing all the textures for the game.
On the whole, there are a lot of upcoming horror games to be excited for, in both the AAA and independent scenes. While the likes of the remakes of Dead Space and Resident Evil are certainly something to anticipate, there's also a burst of more obscure titles that are providing fresh takes on the genre. Right now seems like a fantastic time to be a fan of digital scares.
