Last week, SNK teased a new fighter coming to Samurai Shodown,  the 2019 reboot of a fighting game series that has existed since the days of the Neo Geo in 1993. The character was revealed to be a crossover between Samurai Shodown and Honor of Kings, Tencent's mobile 5v5 MOBA, and today it was officially announced that GongSun Li will be added as free DLC for all players on August 5.

Many fans assumed the DLC fighter would be GongSun Li, described as a dancer from a foreign country whose "performance has the power to entrance and uplift the masses" in a press release from SNK, based on a silhouette image shared alongside the crossover teaser. The official announcement also came with a video showing off what the new Samurai Shodown fighter is capable of with her parasol weapon.

Though the crossover between SNK's fighting game and TiMi Studios' Chinese mobile title may seem odd to some, Honor of Kings has been hugely popular, even becoming the highest-grossing mobile game in 2018 according to Variety. That success has led to TiMi Studios working on Pokemon Unite for Nintendo, another MOBA in development for the Switch and mobile devices.

The characters from SNK games have been involved with a variety of crossovers in recent months. Probably the biggest example is the addition of Terry Bogard from Fatal Fury in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as part of the party fighting game's first DLC fighter pass.

Samurai Shodown is available for PlayStation 4, Switch, Xbox One, and Stadia.
