Samuel L. Jackson has recently hinted that he has unlocked and tapped into brand-new sides of Nick Fury that he didn’t even know existed up until this point throughout the process of making Marvel Studios' upcoming Secret Invasion series. Jackson made his grand introduction to Marvel Cinematic Universe in the post-credits sequence for 2008's Iron Man.

Jackson's notorious spy and former S.H.I.E.L.D. Director has been such a magnetic and influential presence in the many storylines that web together to form the MCU. So far, Jackson has starred in a total of eleven Marvel Studios films to date. Nick Fury is the man behind and responsible for the Avengers team coming together in the first place. However, long-time fans still didn’t really know much about his backstory until the release of 2019's Captain Marvel. The film’s events would go on to explain Fury's inspiration behind forming the Avengers Initiative. Captain Marvel was also really important to his overall story arc because it introduces Fury to the alien race known as the Skrulls. The Skrulls end up playing a crucial role in the highly-anticipated new series.

Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige has recently revealed that the new series will not be strictly following the original comic arc to a tee. Rather, it’s expected to serve as a spotlight for Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn's characters. Although much still remains a mystery in terms of the plot for the series, Jackson recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly about returning to the legendary role of Fury. "There are things that even I really didn't know about Nick Fury that I just found out. The minds behind what happened during the Blip are fantastic. That's part of what we're uncovering when we do this series now," he stated. "It’s giving me an opportunity to explore something other than the badassery of who Nick Fury is. I've had a good time doing that, and I'm looking forward to people sharing that aspect of who he is when this series does happen."

The six-episode miniseries is loosely based on the Secret Invasion comic book arc. The show is also set to feature the return of many beloved MCU characters, including Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), Mendelsohn (Talos), Martin Freeman (Everett Ross), and Don Cheadle (James Rhodes/War Machine). Games of Thrones' Emilia Clarke is also set to make her official MCU debut, although her role still remains unknown.

Jackson seems excited to share the multidimensionality and complexity within such a well-established character like Nick Fury - one he himself thought he already knew fully and deeply. Yet, details on these different layers that Jackson is referencing to peeling back still remain hidden as well. Disney Plus still has yet to drop a release date for the upcoming series, but it hopefully won't be too long until they at least share some first look images of the Nick Fury to tide fans over in the meantime.

Secret Invasion is expected to premiere on Disney Plus in 2022.
