The lasagna-loving cat Garfield is making a comeback in an upcoming animated film, but he will not be alone this time around. It has just been confirmed that actor Samuel L. Jackson has been brought on board to play a new character named Vic, who happens to be the ginger cat’s father. It should be an interesting dynamic to witness for long-standing fans of the comic strip, and will likely affect the plot of the film.

Sony Pictures confirmed the animated Garfield film back in 2016 and announced in November 2021 that Chris Pratt would be voicing the Monday-hating cat. Jackson has now been added to the mix, bringing the two Marvel Cinematic Universe actors back together. This time, though, they will be portraying the roles of father and son, and while fans are already aware of Garfield's eccentric ways, it remains to be seen whether he gets his witty sense of humor from his father.

The upcoming Garfield project will be based on the extremely popular comic strip. However, no actor has been brought on yet to portray the role of the iconic cat’s owner Jon Arbuckle. In the comic strips, the interactions between Garfield and Jon are typically highlighted, along with the titular character’s sibling Odie the dog, and loved by millions of fans around the globe. With Jackson on board, fans are now waiting for the next casting announcement and hoping it will be for Jon.

Chris Pratt Garfield

Garfield is one of the most popular comic strips, currently being published in over 2,500 newspapers and journals globally. Originally created by Jim Davis in 1976, Garfield now holds the Guinness World Record for the world’s most widely syndicated comic strip. Many of the strips poke fun at Mondays, the first day of the workweek, and Garfield being a lazy cat who is always overeating. The strip has been adapted for multiple television shows, games, and even films starring Bill Murray as the orange cat.

With Jackson playing the cat’s father in the upcoming Garfield reboot, it seems like the animated film might focus on the popular figure’s backstory. Jackson and Pratt will be coming together after appearing in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War and 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. Both their characters, Nick Fury and Peter Quill are integral parts of the MCU. Quill will next be seen in the much-awaited Thor: Love and Thunder in July, whereas Fury will return in Secret Invasion, one of Marvel Studios' Disney Plus series.

Garfield is scheduled to premiere in theaters on November 22, 2023.
