Sam Raimi talked about the return of Alfred Molina's Doc Ock in the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home film. For those who don't know, Spider-Man: No Way Home will pick up after the events of the second Tom Holland superhero film.
The Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer broke the internet, to say the least. It brought out all of the big guns by utilizing nostalgia, rumors and action set pieces. The film teased the return of Norman Osborn/Green Goblin and Molina's Doc Ock, as well as many other potential villains. Fans think the Sinister Six will be making an appearance in the film due to some of the shots in the trailer.
The speculation ran rampant because fans also think they spotted the Lizard, Electro, Sandman, and even Charlie Cox's Daredevil in the Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer. The one thing that is confirmed without rumors or speculation is Raimi's opinion on Doc Ock's return. The director had nothing but good things to say about the villain's return. “That was beautiful," the director said during an interview with SyFy. "He looks great, the animation’s great. I’m assuming it’s not puppeted because when we did Doc Ock, we had puppets and animation for his octopus tentacles. But it was smooth and powerful and I loved his costume they kept [from the original]. I think it’s gonna be a great movie."
No Way Home did a good job of keeping the appearance of the Spider-Man 2 villain intact. How the character survived and his state of mind has yet to be answered. If Spider-Man: No Way Home incorporates time travel, universe swapping, or plane shifting, then fans won't know for sure until they watch it in theaters this December. There's also the possibility that this is the MCU version of Doc Ock and not the same one who seemingly died in Spider-Man 2, but Marvel just decided to use the same actor for a new incarnation of the character.
Of course, this is all just speculation. Raimi has no input in terms of the Spider-Man: No Way Home story, so fans won't see his creative influence in the film. Hopefully, Disney does the character, the director, and fans justice. It's still good to see Raimi in good spirits about them utilizing the character that he's partly responsible for popularizing.
Depending on what the next trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home reveals, fans may want to check in on those who worked on The Amazing Spider-Man films. Those films brought a lot of villains to the big screen, including Rhino, Electro, Felicia Hardy/Black Cat, and Lizard. If any of these characters appear in No Way Home, then many will have a great time seeing this battle of nostalgia.
Spider-Man: No Way Home will be in theaters on December 17th, 2021.
