Few video game franchises are as notorious as Saints Row, once considered a GTA clone that evolved into something far more bombastic. While the franchise hasn't received a major new entry in a few years, that's slated to change next year. August 2022 will see the release of a Saints Row reboot, and fans got their first real look during The Game Awards.

The trailer shows off a lot of the new elements that fans can expect from Saints Row, including character customization, combat, and a wingsuit. The game has a lot in common with the Saints Row games of the past, though it certainly looks a lot fresher than previous games. The trailer is more vibrant than what the past few games have been, boasting a more light-hearted town than Saints Row 4 had.

In many ways, Saints Row looks like Just Cause, especially with the addition of the wingsuit. It's clear that Saints Row is wearing its inspirations on its sleeve, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. The game is clearly leaning into its action-heavy elements without sacrificing the weirdness that made up the previous entries.

If anything, the Saints Row reboot is seemingly balancing modern elements with the mechanics that defined Saints Row 3 back in 2011. If Volition can successfully pull that off, then fans should get what they're hoping for out of the reboot.

Saints Row will release on August 23, 2022.
