Saints Row 5 is definitely coming, but there is a lot of confusion about where the franchise could go next. After all, by the end of Saints Row 4, the Earth is destroyed and the Saints comprise the only known survivors of humanity. Still, Volition reaffirmed that the next Saints Row game is in fact in development, so there is a future for the franchise as a whole. The best place to look for where the series could go is the ending of Saints Row: Gat out of Hell, or rather its endings (plural). One of these endings must be established as the true ending for Saints Row to continue.

After an alien invasion decimates the planet Earth, the Saints are left floating through space, leaving many to wonder what Saints Row 5 will be about. That said, Saints Row: Gat out of Hell which served as a stand alone epilogue to Saints Row 4 has already taken the story from outer space into Hell, and its numerous alternate endings provide a hint at what the future of the franchise may be. With Saints Row, though, anything is possible, as fans of the series probably never thought that Saints Row 4 would take players to an alien simulation deep in outer space.

Saints Row: Gat out of Hell Endings

Deep Silver Teases Major Announcement for This Year's E3 - Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell cover

Saints Row: Gat out of Hell has five possible endings, four of which lead to four different distinct possibilities for Saints Row 5. After defeating Satan and saving The Boss in Hell, God himself offers Johnny Gat one of five choices. The first two choices mean vastly diverse things for Johnny but don't make much of a difference to Saints Row 5. Gat can choose either to go to Heaven, which he believes is his only shot at getting in, or to become the new ruler of Hell. While both are fitting for the character, neither affects the story of Saints Row 5.

In the above choices, the next game would likely see the Saints searching for a new planet to inhabit and rebuild the human race. Gat's third choice is to learn from God the answers to all the questions in the universe. Although this likely means something similar for the Saints as the first two options, it is possible that Johnny Gat returns in Saints Row 5 as some sort of omnipotent being, perhaps pointing the Saints in the right direction. Still, this seems unlikely and it is out of character for Johnny Gat to choose this.

The fourth choice sees God restore the Earth back to its former glory. The catch, because of course there's a catch, is that this would, in God's words, retcon the Saints Row universe. Choosing this option lets the player see a cutscene of the Saints as law enforcement chasing down some unknown adversary named Brimstone. If this was the canon choice, it would give Volition the chance to reboot the series and bring it back down to Earth (literally and figuratively), but seeing the Saints as cops would be quite the twist.

Gat's final option is to learn the location of a suitable new homeworld for the Saints, and upon choosing this choice, a cutscene shows Gat with the saints just after arriving to this new planet. Fortunately for Gat, the planet is inhabited by a warlike alien race. This would be a great next installment also, but Volition would have to think of a way to include super powers like the ones the boss had in the simulation or Gat's powers in hell, or otherwise justify their lack of inclusion. Still, this and the previous option seem like the most likely places for the next Saints Row game.

Saints Row 5 is currently in development.
