One of the more overlooked properties from Square Enix's catalogue is the SaGa series of JRPGs. It has been a niche franchise with a dedicated following ever since its debut in 1989. The first three games in the series were localized in the west as Final Fantasy Legend, to capitalize on the brand name, but it has since then made a name for itself. These games even managed to get a remastered package, releasing on the Nintendo Switch, Steam, and mobile devices as Collection of SaGa Final Fantasy Legend.
Fans have also celebrated the re-release of a classic title from the PS1, with 2021 seeing SaGa Frontier Remastered being brought to multiple platforms. This entry saw updated HD visuals and improved battle pacing, along with a brand new story path for the protagonist. The celebration stream for this remaster also had the creator of the series, Square Enix's Akitoshi Kawazu, stating that more SaGa remasters were also on the way. Kawazu reinforces this statement with a post made on Twitter at the end of 2021.
Kawazu's tweet thanks the many fans who have supported the SaGa franchise in 2021, following it up with a tease of what to expect in 2022. According to a rough translation of the tweet, he states that a team is working on various things so that support can be continued in the new year. This tweet follows up saying that they are hoping to not only produce more remasters, but also a remake and possibly even a new game in the series to be shown.
This statement falls in line with Kawazu's statement regarding future games from the SaGa franchise being remastered. Three games he mentioned before that were planned to get remasters include SaGa Frontier 2, Romancing SaGa, and Unlimited SaGa, with each entry having a significant influence on the series. In regards to what game could be remade, there's plenty to choose from, though fans will have to wait until an official announcement is made.
This news is promising for fans of the SaGa franchise as a whole, considering the last game from the series was released that wasn't a remaster was SaGa: Scarlet Grace back in 2019. Other games released after that have been mobile or browser-based entries which may not be what most fans have wanted. With the recent success SaGa has seen on the PS4 and Switch, there's a chance fans can expect to hear more news about Kawazu's plans this year.
