One of the central goals in Shedworks' open-world game Sable is to obtain as many different masks as possible. Each mask represents a different profession, and players must seek out each mask for the titular character to have some career options at the end of the game.

These masks can be earned in a variety of different ways, from the game's many side quests to turning in badges at the local Maskcaster. Some are quite easy to find, while others can prove elusive to even the most dogged explorer. Here's how each mask compares in terms of how hard it is to acquire.

14 The Child's Mask

Sable in a white mask in front of stone stairs

The Child's Mask is by far the easiest mask to find, as every player starts the game with it equipped. While not the most elegant mask, it does feature prominently in the early game as the only one to which players have access.

It's in the Child's Mask that Sable earns her Gliding ability and assembles the pieces for her jetbike, Simoon. Shedding the Child's Mask signifies Sable's new status as a Glider and begins her journey in earnest, though players can always re-equip it if they're feeling nostalgic.

13 The Ibexii Mask

Sable in a white, antlered skull standing in front of a bunch of stone pillars

The second mask Sable earns in the game, the Ibexii Mask, symbolizes a new beginning for the young hero. The Ibexii Mask is gifted to Sable by the leader of her tribe, Jadi, as a present to celebrate the beginning of her Gliding.

Taking off her Child's Mask is a big moment in the young Ibexii's life, and the blank, white skull of her new mask signifies an infinite possibility for the future. As her Gliding commences, Sable ventures beyond the borders of her homeland and out into a rich, vibrant open-world to find her true calling, whatever that might be.

12 The Merchant's Mask

The Merchant's Mask can be bought, making it one of the easier masks to acquire. A merchant named Iria in the town of Eccria will offer Merchant Badges at the steep price of 100 cuts per badge.

The price may seem prohibitive at first, but cuts come quickly especially for diligent explorers keen on uncovering every secret. After buying three badges, players can turn them to acquire the Merchant's Mask.

11 The Cartographer's Mask

Sable standing in a mask made of gears with a weather vane on top and a vista in the background

The Cartographer's Mask is one of the easier masks to find in the game, requiring only a decent set of climbing skills and 150 cuts. A Cartographer can be found in each region of Midden, and their balloons make them easy to spot from a distance over Sable's barren wasteland of a world.

Players can purchase a single Cartographer's Badge for 50 cuts from each Cartographer, and after buying three, can return to the Maskcaster for the Cartographer's Mask.

10 The Scrapper's Mask

Sable standing in a gray, wrought-iron mask surrounded by scrap metal

As players journey through the world of Midden, they'll find explorable shipwrecks littered with pieces of scrap metal laying around just waiting to be picked up. Bringing this scrap to the local Scrapper at Burnt Oak station will periodically award players with Scrapper Badges.

Players can turn over their Scrapper Badges to the Maskcaster for the Scrapper Mask. It's a relatively easy mask to acquire, even if gathering enough scrap might take a bit of time.

9 The Shade's Mask

Sable wearing a mask with multiple sets of eyes standing in a cave with strange symbols on the walls

Underneath the bridge leading into the town of Eccria, players can find an old man by the name of Maz who used to be an infamous vigilante by the name of the Shade. Maz asks Sable to recover his old mask to aid him in freeing his son from wrongful imprisonment.

Players can follow the Shade's symbol through the town to find Maz's hiding spot and reclaim the creepy-looking mask. After donning the mask and saving the boy, Sable gets to keep the Shade's mask as a reward.

8 The Machinist's Mask

Sable wearing a gray mask sitting in front of a red jetbike and a large campsite

The Machinist's Mask is one that players get a bit of a headstart toward earning, as the first badge is a freebie from the machinist in Sable's tribe. Earning more requires completing missions for the various machinists scattered around the world. One side quest will ask players to investigate the Watch, a mysterious ruin at the edge of the map that dives deep into the lore of Sable's world

After earning three badges, players can return to the Maskcaster to claim the Machinist's Mask.

7 The Beetle Mask

A black mask with large yellow eyes and a long horn on top in front of a patterned, tan background

The Beetle Mask can be claimed by completing the three questlines acquired from the innkeepers stationed at the game's three main camps. Each quest involves collecting either the beetles themselves or something they produce.

While there's some difficulty to each quest, the real trouble comes from a glitch in the quest from Marrow Bone Station that prevents completion. If players do manage to find a workaround, turning in all three Beetle Badges will earn them the Beetle Mask.

6 The Guard's Mask

Sable in a knight's helmet standing in front of archway with banners connected to the top

The Guard's Mask can be acquired by bringing three Guard Badges to the Maskcaster. The easiest badge can be earned by completing the quest "Heartbreak In The City." Eccrine Guard Sandip will give Sable the badge as a reward.

The rest of the necessary badges can be found by seeking out the retired Guard Elisabet across the world and completing the quests she offers. After collecting three badges, players can bring them back to the Maskcaster to claim the mask.

5 Whale Ship Mask

The Whale Ship Mask is one of the more challenging masks to find, as the path to earning isn't immediately clear. Players can find this one halfway through one of the game's more well-hidden side quests.

The "Historical Connection" quest tasks players with finding six audio recordings in different shipwrecks around the world. After finding three of these logs, players can head to The Whale, a colossal ship located on the far west side of the map, to claim the Whale Ship Mask.

4 The Entertainer's Mask

Sable in a sackcloth mask that looks like a little doll sitting in front of a large campsite

The Entertainer's Mask is challenging to find because it relies on a single, challenging quest. The first two Entertainer's Badges can be found by completing easy quests in Eccria. The third badge requires the completion of the quest "Searching for Llhor," which can be picked up from Shar Varana in Eccria.

The clue lead to Llhor's hideout in the Sodic Wastes. After a profound conversation on the meaning of purpose, Llhor gives players the final Entertainer's Badge they'll need to claim the Entertainer's Mask.

3 The Sandwyrm Mask

Sable in a tan, wormlike mask with spikes on its neck standing in front of a large, stone statue of a similar looking worm

The Sandwyrm Mask is by far the most uncomfortable mask to both look at and wear, and the search to find it involves the darkest story Sable has to offer. After climbing up the Wyrm's mouth and using the bike call to get in, players will have to navigate the Zelda-like dungeon found inside the still living beast.

Along the way, players can find diary entries that chronicle that last entrant's descent into madness as he served the Wyrm like a god. He eventually sacrificed himself to the Wyrm as a meal. The Sandwyrm Mask (made of baby Wyrm pieces) can be taken from a shrine at the end of the Wyrm.

2 The Climber's Mask

Person in a lizard mask sitting on a platform overlooking a desert dotted with pools of water

The Climber's Mask is one of Sable's more elusive masks, as the badges required to obtain are scattered across the entire map. One can be found in the Badlands by scaling Kemble's Cube, while another can be obtained by saving a Climber from the bottom of a well near Eccria.

The third is the most difficult to find, hiding near some steam geyser pillars in the Sodic Wastes. A Climber there wants the eggs of a rare bird that nests at the top of the pillars. Retrieve them and he'll offer the final badge needed for the Climber's Mask.

1 The Chum Mask

Sable in a white and pink, antlered mask standing in front of a rock formation with a tower peeking out the top and bubbles floating from the tower

The Chum Mask is by far the hardest mask to acquire in Sable. Chum Eggs can be found throughout the world of Midden, and when returned to the Chum Queen will reward Sable with permanent boosts to her maximum stamina.

To earn the Chum Mask, though, players will have to bring 100 Chum Eggs to the Queen, maxing out the stamina gauge and completing the "Building A Queendom" quest. The Chum Mask is unique in that it has utility, wiggling its antlers faster the closer a player is to an unclaimed Egg.
