Ryan Reynolds is gearing up for the release of his upcoming not-Deadpool video game movie Free Guy, and it seems as though he preferred to keep that distance in as many ways as possible. While the movie itself is set to feature plenty of Easter eggs, there's one particular cameo where Reynolds unequivocally drew the line. .

Considering how Reynolds himself has essentially become synonymous with the character of Deadpool over the past half-decade, it's not surprising to hear that many assumed the merc with a mouth would make a cameo in Free Guy. After all, the extremely meta video game movie is already set to include a baker's plethora of special appearances, and that's even aside from Halo's Warthog vehicle crashing the premiere. But it's always important to set boundaries in any meaningful relationship, and that's just what Reynolds did. Many fans expected to see Deadpool show up in Free Guy given the Marvel character's rather famous penchant for breaking the fourth wall and constantly addressing other properties, but that's not how things turned out.

"The thing that I love most about Free Guy is that we’re doing something that I think is very increasingly rare, and very hard to do in this current marketplace. Which is open a big blockbuster movie that's based on nothing but an original idea," Reynolds said when speaking with CinemaBlend. "I love that we had that opportunity, so no, I never really felt like I needed to put Deadpool in. He wouldn't really fit in there. We do have some massive surprises in the movie that are courtesy of getting to work at Disney. But yeah no, I never thought of putting Deadpool in there." This may come as a bit of a surprise to many, particularly following a video posted by Reynolds last month featuring Deadpool reacting to the Free Guy trailer (along with his new family-friendly friend Korg). But it's not an unreasonable thought process.

Free Guy is a unique take on the typical video game movie in that it's more original than not, despite its reliance on familiar visuals and callbacks. Starring Reynolds as a video game NPC (non-player character) who becomes self-aware thanks to the help of Jodie Comer's mysterious Millie (aka Molotov Girl), the movie appears to be making a whole story out of the sorts of questions every gamer has asked at some point in their lives (presumably precluded by the word "dude..."). Aside from Reynolds also playing an eerily swole original character, the movie is set to feature tons of cameos from big names in gaming like Jacksepticeye and Pokimane, which is one of the reasons many expected to see Deadpool make an appearance.

But it makes sense why Reynolds would want to keep these things separate. Deadpool is well-known as a scene-stealer, and any shot that featured him in Free Guy would likely divert attention from whatever else was going on. But aside from that, these are both Reynolds properties, and mixing them together like that might make them both respectively feel like less of an individual production and more just a part of a whole. Deadpool may have already boarded that ship thanks to his inclusion to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Free Guy still has a shot at doing its own thing, regardless of all its cameos.

While it might be a little disappointing to hear there won't be a crossover, fans should be able to rest easy knowing both Deadpool and Free Guy appear poised to maintain a certain level of quality on their own. With an R-rated Deadpool still in the works and Free Guy enjoying some positive reviews, it looks as though the decision to keep them separate may have been a sound one.

Free Guy will release exclusively to theaters on August 13th.
