Good things come to those who wait, and apparently better things come to those who wait even longer. Deadpool 3, Ryan Reynolds' highly anticipated official foray into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is taking its sweet time. So it seems only fair that Reynolds himself would offer up a little status report before fans start rioting.

Reynolds is essentially Deadpool in mortal human form anyway, minus all the stabbing, so perhaps he feels a certain obligation to keep folks abreast of the situation surrounding the next entry. This merc with a mouth instantly charmed audiences upon his first big-screen appearance in 2016's Deadpool, and has been enjoying a rather large niche fanbase ever since thanks to being the only R-rated mainstream Marvel film in recent memory. To that end, while promoting his new movie Free Guy, it likely came as no surprise for Reynolds to face several questions regarding the status of his upcoming sequel.

Unfortunately, it seems as though filming hasn't even begun on Deadpool 3, which will likely bum out a few eager potential viewers. Even the film's stunt coordinator has joined The Book of Boba Fett, which should give an idea of priorities at the moment. But Reynolds seems optimistic, thanks to a script that's apparently coming along nicely. When asked how likely Deadpool 3 is to begin filming in 2022, Reynolds replied in a characteristically Reynolds fashion. "The percentage chance? I don't know. I couldn't assign a percentage to that," he said when speaking with Collider. "I'd say it's 50/50 maybe? We're really actively developing it and getting it into pretty good shape. What the hell month is it? August? Oh next year? Probably pretty damn good. I'd say 70%."

According to Reynolds, he and the team are "actively developing" Deadpool 3, though at the moment that seems to mean they're still hard at work creating the script. "It's something that is just a daily process," he continued. "Writing is kind of like that, you've got to allot time to do it and walk away, and I'm working with the Molyneuxs on it, it’s been great. They're incredibly talented and so, so smart. They so understand that world and know how to zig when everyone's expecting a zag, so it's been a lot of fun." So knowing that the team appears to be smack dab in the middle of the scripting phase should give a good idea of how much time there still is before anyone can expect a release date.

The Molyneuxs Reynolds mentioned refer to sisters Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin and Wendy Molyneux, who gained clout for their excellent writing on Bob's Burgers and joined the Deadpool 3 project in late 2020. Considering that show's penchant for humor that doesn't normally take the expected joke, they'll likely feel right at home in a production like this one. Meanwhile, now that Reynolds is finally finished working on Free Guy (barring the current press tour), he's free to put more energy into Deadpool 3, at least assuming he doesn't have a plethora of other projects in his flipbook, which he pretty much always does.

The takeaway from this should be that Deadpool 3 is definitely coming. After Kevin Feige specifically noted that it would be Marvel's only R-rated project, it's not like anyone would let it fall through the cracks. So all that's left is just to wait. Maybe order a pineapple and olive pizza to pass the time.
