With the game launching in early December, Cyberpunk 2077 has dominated the top of the Steam charts since before it was even released, with CD Projekt Red's controversial sci-fi RPG reigning supreme for 7 weeks. Although a number of games have come close to surpassing it, with Sea of Thieves closing in on the crown the week before last, it seems Cyberpunk has finally been moved down the list by a classic Steam hit.
The game in question is none other than Rust, with the incredibly popular multiplayer post-apocalyptic survival game managing to clinch the top spot last week over 7 years since its original debut back in 2013. It's not all too surprising considering Rust has had something of a resurgence as of late, with a number of streamers hopping back into the game in recent weeks.
Due to the introduction of the admittedly controversial OfflineTV server, Pokimane, xQc, Valkyrie, and more have broadcast Rust to the world, while even streamers outside of that bubble, such as Jacksepticeye, have got involved too. The game even managed to crack over $1,000,000 in Steam revenue on two separate days during this month alone. Clearly, it's continuing to generate a huge audience despite being available for years now, with the team continuing to innovate and expand on the game's concept to create a survival experience like no other.
It seems Rust will be looking to conquer new platforms very soon as well, with recent ratings from the ESRB confirming that the formerly PC-exclusive survival title will be making its way to consoles sooner rather than later. The console ports have been in the works for a while now, originally being announced back in November 2019 before receiving a delay last year. According to the ratings, it will be coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, sporting a mature rating due to bloody violence and cannibalism amongst a variety of other reasons cited by the certification.
Although Rust took the top spot on the Steam rankings last week, the lineup was filled with interesting games, as Cyberpunk 2077 dropping to 3rd, Sea of Thieves maintained its decent sales with a fourth-place spot, and Phasmophobia continuing to dominate by bumping up to fifth. It'll be interesting to see how Steam's rankings look further into 2021, especially with the likes of IO Interactive's Hitman 3, The Medium, and Little Nightmares 2 all making their way to Valve's seminal PC marketplace very soon. Regardless, Rust is clearly enjoying a newfound surge of players and could continue to do so with so much new attention from Twitch viewers.
Rust is out now for PC, with console ports currently in development.
