Russia will reportedly ban multiple games, including Apex Legends and The Last of Us. This is in light of reports that the Russian government started cracking down on "banned content" in various media, including video games. When Russia invaded Ukraine back in February, the gaming industry in both countries was greatly affected. Gaming giants such as Ubisoft, EA, and Epic suspended sales in Russia as a response. Esports teams competing in games like Valorant and Apex Legends were also affected with Ukranian players having to skip tournaments, or majority Russian teams renaming themselves to put some distance from their government's actions. Now, there have been reports that Russia was extending its censorship to video games.RELATED: Apex Legends Player Designs New Passive Abilities for Each ClassIn a tweet by Apex Legends news account alphaINTEL, Russia is said to be considering banning games that include "LGBT propaganda," meaning those that promote "non-traditional relationships." They attached a list of games, which included popular titles like Apex Legends, Life Is Strange, The Last of Us, The Sims 3, and more.

The account didn't provide further details on the supposed ruling. Apart from Russia's reported censorship of video games, this also followed news that Russian lawmakers supported a bill that would ban media that promoted so-called "LGBT propaganda" among all ages. This covered books, films, advertising, and online content. Citizens who are found guilty could be fined up to 400,000 roubles (around $6,500), while foreigners would be deported from Russia. This is similar to China's video game censorship rules.

Many gamers reacted to the news with anger, calling Russia "homophobic" and questioning their decision to implement the ban. Some expressed concern for the LGBTQ+ people in Russia who have to experience the government's harsh crackdown and censorship. Meanwhile, Russian gamers were saddened by the news and said their goodbyes to their favorite games. Regardless if one is LGBTQ+ or not, it's clear that many of the games in the list have passionate fans that love the gameplay and story.

LGBTQ+ stories in video games aren't uncommon. Apex Legends recently confirmed that Bloodhound, who is non-binary, and Fuse, who is pansexual, were in a relationship. Titles like Life Is Strange and The Last of Us also didn't shy away from showcasing same-sex relationships. Meanwhile, players were allowed to create queer couples and families in The Sims. Many players resonate with these characters and their stories. Plus, portraying these experiences in mainstream games opens more conversation about inclusivity and diversity. Whatever the Russian government reasons were, the fact that it's reportedly considering banning video games on the existence of LGBTQ+ themes could be perceived as suppression of free speech and promoting homophobia among citizens.
