According to a new rumor, Ubisoft is working on a standalone multiplayer Far Cry game along with the next major entry in the franchise. Ubisoft has released several mainline titles and a few spin-offs in the Far Cry series, with Far Cry 6 from 2021 being the latest entry.

Far Cry games generally have a big focus on the single-player campaign, but they also feature options for cooperative and competitive multiplayer. Furthermore, Ubisoft consistently releases DLC for these games, as Far Cry 6 received three pieces of add-ons, each revolving around the main antagonist of previous games in the series, along with an expansion. While little is known about upcoming games in the franchise, a new leak sheds light on a couple of projects in development at Ubisoft.

According to Insider Gaming sources, Ubisoft is working on Far Cry 7 along with a standalone multiplayer-only title in the Far Cry franchise. Insider Gaming doesn’t appear to have many details on them, but its sources have shared that both titles were intended to be a single game at one point, before getting split into two separate titles. As per the same sources, Far Cry 7 is known internally as Project Blackbird, while the multiplayer game is called Project Maverick, with Ubisoft Montreal being involved in both of them.

Insider Gaming reports that the multiplayer Far Cry game changed several times throughout the development process, and it’s currently an extraction-based shooter with a permadeath mechanic. Furthermore, this Far Cry game is set in the Alaskan wilderness, and the report speculates if it could have been in development for a long time, as a survey from 2015 mentions a survival title set in remote Alaska. The leaks don’t end there, as Insider Gaming claims to have received screenshots from this multiplayer Far Cry game that show chests, extraction zones, and more.

There are fewer details available on Far Cry 7, but it could also be set in the Alaskan wilderness as the two games were originally meant to be a single title. It looks like Far Cry 7 is still a couple of years away, and it seems to be targeting a release window of fall 2025. Ubisoft has not shared its plans for the future of the Far Cry series, but this news seems highly plausible, especially with extraction-style games gaining popularity in recent years. Still, fans should take every rumor or leak with a grain of salt and wait for an official announcement.
