It's safe to say that, thanks to the much-anticipated The Force Awakens hitting cinemas in December, Star Wars: Battlefront is set to be one of the biggest gaming releases of the year. That said, we don't know all that much about what to expect from the long-awaited third entry in the series — but a new leak might just change all that.

The information comes from Making Star Wars, one of the sites at the center of the many rumors circulating the future of the Star Wars franchise as a whole. While the site has come through on some scoops in the past, many of their findings are unproven at present, so it's perhaps worth taking these rumors with a literal mountain of salt.

With that being said, there will be few Star Wars fans disappointed with the direction of the new Battlefront if these rumors are to be believed. Allegedly, fans are set to see a campaign that spans the entire saga, where they'll experience major battles from the perspective of both the Rebel Alliance and the Empire — with a major focus on the events of the original trilogy.

While there will be some prequel trilogy content, it will largely be confined to fan-favorite encounters like the opening battle of Revenge of the Sith and skirmishes from The Clone Wars. The bulk of the game will then focus on classic battles from the much-loved original trilogy, but the last section of the campaign will go beyond that, even touching upon the events of The Force Awakens.

Given that the game is set to release ahead of the movie, spoilers are of course a concern — but Battlefront will only be touching on the earliest happenings of the movie. This is no half-baked tease, though, as developers DICE were granted access to Pinewood Studios to gather scans of the real-life props and sets being used to ensure a high level of accuracy.

In news that won't surprise anyone who's a fan of the Battlefield games, plenty of DLC is being planned for Battlefront. Five packs are reported to be planned, with two or three being centred around The Force Awakens. Each individual pack will include at least three new maps, some new vehicles and some new 'hero' characters.

Confirmation that 'hero' characters are set to make their return will please Battlefront veterans. It seems that the system will be much the same as in previous titles; if players perform well, they can reach a point where they can take control of a super-powerful 'hero'. This mechanic is still being worked on, but at present each player will typically be able to play as a hero at least once per match.

That might not sound too outlandish, but considering that the information suggests that multiplayer matches will cater for 64 players, much like some versions of Battlefield 4. That's double the capacity of Battlefront II, and a hugely exciting prospect for anyone who is looking forward to replicating the large scale battles of the movies.

All in all, Battlefront is shaping up to be just what fans are looking for from the series' resurgence. If this leak turns out to be legitimate, it's going to be an excellent holiday season for Star Wars fans — but it might be a little bit too good to be true. Stay tuned to Game Rant for all the latest on Star Wars: Battlefront ahead of its release.
