Sly Cooper was one of the iconic mascot characters that saw a trilogy of games released on the PlayStation 2 along with Ratchet and Clank and the Jak and Daxter games. The first three Sly Cooper games were developed by Sucker Punch, the developer that would later go on to make the Infamous games and, most recently, Ghost of Tsushima. Sucker Punch’s Sly Cooper trilogy was wrapped up nicely, but fans were still glad to see the series return in 2013 with a fourth game developed by a different studio, Sanzaru Games.

Many players, and possibly Sanzaru Games itself, had assumed that Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time was going to be the beginning of a second trilogy of Sly Cooper games, but this was not the case. To make matters worse, the game ended on an unresolved cliffhanger. However, rumors have been circulating recently that a long-awaited fifth Sly Cooper game is in development.

A source has now corroborated these numerous rumors about a possible Sly Cooper game in development. Speaking on the Xbox Era Podcast, Shpeshal_Nick hinted that a new Sly Cooper game could possibly be announced during a PlayStation showcase event in September 2022. This information was apparently revealed to him by an inside source. The developer for this new Sly Cooper game is as yet unconfirmed but may have already been leaked to be PixelOpus, the studio behind Concrete Genie.

While none of these rumors are particularly concrete by themselves, they all corroborate the same story, which is that a new Sly Cooper game will be announced at some point in late 2022 and that PlayStation is planning a major games showcase for September. This also lines up with the 20th anniversary of the Sly Cooper series, which makes this the perfect time to announce a sequel.

There is also a rumor circulating that a possible new game in the Infamous series could be revealed at the same September showcase. According to AccountNgt on Twitter, the same source that leaked the Sly Cooper information to Shpeshal_Nick also told them about a new Infamous announcement, although whether this is a full sequel game or a remaster is unclear. Shpeshal_Nick had shared a similar Infamous rumor in 2021, so it is possible that this is the same game mentioned back then and had its announcement quietly pushed back.

Both Sly Cooper and Infamous were originally made by Sucker Punch, but it is unlikely that the Ghost of Tsushima developer is connected to any future projects in either series. However, Sucker Punch is reportedly working on a new open world game, and it isn't known yet if this is a new original title or a sequel game.

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time is available on PS3 and PS Vita.
