THQ Nordic is one of the most fascinating publishers in the video game industry. Originally known as Nordic Games, THQ Nordic has acquired many dormant video game franchises in the past six years since its rebranding to match the now defunct publisher THQ. One such franchise it picked up is Alone in the Dark, which THQ Nordic acquired in 2018 from Atari SA. Now, after seven years since its last entry, it seems THQ Nordic might be preparing to announce a new Alone in the Dark title.Alone in the Dark is often credited as the very first survival horror game, as it was one of the main inspirations for the original Resident Evil alongside the NES game Sweet Home. The game released for DOS computers in 1992 and later came to Panasonic's 3DO in 1994. The game follows either a male or female protagonist as the player solves puzzles and explores a haunted mansion in 1920s Louisiana. The game was followed by three sequels, before being rebooted in 2008 for PS2, PS3, Nintendo Wii, and Xbox 360 by developer Eden Games.RELATED: THQ Nordic Announces Summer Gaming Showcase for AugustThe series went very quiet following the 2008 game's weak reviews until 2015, when Atari released Alone in the Dark: Illumination, a four-player cooperative shooter that was critically panned, receiving a Metacritic aggregated score of 19/100. In 2018 however, THQ Nordic acquired the series from Atari alongside strategy IP Act of War. For years, the publisher has been acquiring dormant IPs such as Destroy All Humans and Timesplitters, some of which it has developed remasters and remakes for, while for other IPs it is producing full sequels. According to recently notable leaker The Snitch, THQ Nordic might be preparing an announcement for Alone in the Dark very soon too.

The Twitter user, who has accurately leaked information for games such as The Last of Us Part 1, Resident Evil 4 Remake, and Hollow Knight: Silksong, has posted a cryptic teaser to their Twitter account referencing the Alone in the Dark 2005 film adaptation, specifically a quote from the film.

This coincides with the fact that THQ Nordic is hosting its second annual digital showcase on August 12. This is when the publisher is expected to give updates on games such as SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake and Destroy All Humans 2: Reprobed, as well as announcing new titles, be they remasters or sequels.

Outside of this tease, it's not known what form the Alone in the Dark project THQ Nordic might be preparing could take. It could be a remaster of the classic games or the 2008 reboot, or a full remake in the style of recent projects like Resident Evil 2 and the upcoming Dead Space remake.

Alone in the Dark is rumored to be in development.
