After the uber success that was Modern Warfare 2, Infinity Ward can do whatever it wants. Well, it should be able to do whatever it wants anyway.

With all the rumors, speculation and confusion surrounding the future of the Call of Duty franchise, we have another rumor to throw into the mix. I've previously reported on some speculation of the next installments of Activision's prize Call of Duty franchise and now it might be possible that one of those ideas could be coming to fruition.

The latest rumor from Destructoid states that Infinity Ward has been hiring some MMO developers from Sony Online Entertainment as well as the help from Blizzard employee. The plan is apparently to continue the annual releases of Call of Duty games with this MMO running alongside them at the same time.

If you didn't already know, we just reported the other day that Infinity Ward may not be working on Modern Warfare 3, a shocking disappointment if this is truely the case as we not only need a third installment, but we'd like IW involved rather than have it shuffled to some other studio.

In addition to that, we know that Activision commissioned a third developer (Sledgehammer Games) to join in on the Call of Duty part alongside Infinity Ward and Treyarch who up until now, have traditionally alternated years to have a Call of Duty game come out annually each fall.

My initial thoughts were that Treyarch could continue the World at War franchise dealing with historical battles and Infinity Ward could continue working on the Modern Warfare franchise dealing with their fictional present/near-future. I figured the third developer brought in would be working on either the MMO which was hinted at as a possibility down the road or a third Call of Duty series based in the future, the only are they've yet to explore.

I suppose that the rumored Canadian developer could be helming Modern Warfare 3 after all.

Whoever ends up doing the next MW title, please allow for 4-player co-op and dedicated servers.

What do you think of this?
