Rumors and leaks regarding Grand Theft Auto 6 have been circulating for a while now despite Rockstar Games having yet to officially announce the game. The newest leak, however, claims that players will earn cryptocurrency in-game, which could rule out some of the most popular Grand Theft Auto 6 rumors out there.

One of the biggest rumors surrounding the new Grand Theft Auto is that it will return the series to the 1980s similar to Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. This rumor has circulated for well over a year now and includes a very popular rumor known as "Project Americas" that states Grand Theft Auto 6's map will span multiple cities and even countries.

However, this newest leak comes from the reputable leaker Tom Henderson via their Twitter account. Henderson is well known for leaking news regarding the Battlefield series but says this time that they talked to someone familiar with the new Grand Theft Auto. They claim that they have heard that players will earn cryptocurrency similar to Bitcoin throughout the game's campaign, which will fluctuate in price based on an in-game market similar to the stock market in Grand Theft Auto 5. Of course, this would rule out Grand Theft Auto 6's supposed 80s setting as Bitcoin didn't release until 2009.

Of course, this information is still just a leak so there is no way to confirm whether or not it is accurate. If Grand Theft Auto 6 is set in modern times the leak does seem likely, as the series has taken plenty of opportunities to comment on real-world events and trends before. However, there have been so many rumors and leaks regarding the game that it is difficult to parse out which ones seem likely or more believable than others. Henderson has been right about many leaks before, however, so it could very well be accurate.

Fans will only know for sure, though, once Rockstar Games officially announces Grand Theft Auto 6, or whatever it ends up being called. If cryptocurrency does make its way into the next Grand Theft Auto game it could be a very unique mechanic. It also could be very interesting to see if the mechanic is incorporated in some way into Grand Theft Auto Online, which has become extremely popular as of late thanks to NoPixel's roleplaying server. Many fans are hoping to see Grand Theft Auto 6 at this year's E3 conference, so hopefully, fans will not have too much longer to wait until they get some official information on the game.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is rumored to be in development.
