Rugrats is a classic animated kids show from the '90s era of Nickelodeon that hasn't had much of a mainstream presence for over a decade now. Although the original show ended in 1994, the series retained popularity via a long stretch of re-runs and the occasional spin-off, leaving fans with little in the way of new content for many many years. Fairly soon, however, that looks to be changing thanks to Paramount Plus.

As part of the rebranding of CBS All Access to Paramount Plus, the service has put out a large suite of announcements meant to entice audiences. Alongside known entities like the Spongebob spin-off Kamp Koral, they also announced new films and more details about their back catalog, as well as several new shows coming to the streamer.

One of those big announcements, of course, was a brand new reboot of Rugrats. The original show featured a handful of toddlers as they go on adventures and get involved in hijinks when left alone by their parents. Most of the show took place from their perspective, using their limited view of the world around them to craft interesting situations and conflicts, and this reboot seems to be doing much the same.

There are some differences, however. The first and most obvious is that while the original Rugrats show was animated in 2D, this new project will feature 3D CGI animation. This is similar to the Spongebob Squarepants prequel show, which will also be using this new animation style. So, while there may be a bit of a lurch in the presentation, it seems work has been done to maintain the original character designs and craft an authentic look for the setting.

Not only that, but the announcement also revealed that the show would feature the original voice cast of Rugrats as well. Every single main character will be voiced by the actor who played them all the way back in 1991, and they haven't missed a beat. Every character sounds more or less as they did when the show first aired, and it'll be a nice hit of nostalgia for anyone who has missed their absence in the time since.

The first look trailer for the Rugrats reboot has been posted publicly for those unconvinced and it's certainly worth checking out for fans of the property. It's not very long, but it gives a nice look at a classic scenario that would've felt right at home in the original show. Hopefully, the series proves to be as faithful to the original as it looks when it finally releases on Paramount Plus.

The Rugrats reboot will premiere on Paramount Plus in 2021.
