Role-playing games allow players to take on a variety of roles from the dutiful knight, the devilish rogue to the overpowered mage. Many RPGs have a well-thought-out magic system for those that wish to fling spells at their enemies while they hide in the back lines hoping to not get hit.

Some of these casting systems are balanced, though arguably many of them can be incredibly overpowered leaving mages to have broken casting tactics that allow them to destroy the enemies ahead with ease. These are the RPGs that have the most broken magic systems that players wouldn't have any other way.

9 Tiny Tina's Wonderlands

Although the magic system in question with Tiny Tina's Wonderlands is small it still has the capability to ruin enemies if players find themselves lucky enough to obtain one of the many legendary spell books.

Those that focus on improving their spells especially if they have picked the class of Spellshot are sure to rely heavily on using their equipped spell. They can lay on a mass amount of special effect damage such as poison, frost, electric, or other effects to weaken their enemies before finishing them off through the sorcery of a simple gun.

8 Dragon Age: Inquisition

Vivienne in Dragon Age: Inquisition

Dragon Age has done magic well throughout the franchise with players being able to take on the role of a mage and explore a variety of skill trees. Players can either take to the front lines as a powerful mage or support their team from behind.

By far the most powerful magic in the entire series can be seen in Dragon Age Inquisition as first the subclass of Knight-Enchanter can be incredibly powerful if combined with the right abilities. Plus the cleanse spell all mages have can be used to make dealing with rifts easier, making mages a necessity.

7 Tyranny

The exciting system mechanics of Tyranny that make its magic so interesting first start with how players can create their own spells. By giving these mages such freedom it is only a matter of time before a player finds a way to make the most broken of spells that will deal with any foe ahead of them.

Although an old title that first came out in 1994, King's Field is still a cult classic when it comes to role-playing games, especially when discussing its use of magic. In its age its dependency on spells is obvious due to the amount of damage they do to all the enemies in a player's path.

Surprisingly there are a lot of spells for players to uncover with both defensive and offensive spells available in a range of categories. Trying out all of them won't have any repercussions especially as they can all be very entertaining and overpowered.

With spells such as Meteor that completely destroys enemies or chain lighting that can be used to damage a group of foes at once, Sorcery allows players to control the field with ease, while still keeping their distance. Leveling up to the far ends of sorcery will lead to even more catastrophic spells that will turn the player unstoppable.

4 Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen

Using Magick in Dragon's Dogma is one of the most powerful things to increase especially due to the lack of limits on stats. This means a player can increase their Magick stat through boosts and items allowing it to become utterly destructive when spells are finally put into play.

One of the most well-known and overpowered strategies exploited by players in Dragon's Dogma is the use of magical archers. The critical damage archers can do with a bow combined with the use of Magick Bows and the Magick stat means players can easily melt any boss in their path.

3 Dark Souls

In a similar fashion to Dragon's Dogma with focusing stats to get better at spells, those that have played Dark Souls know of the immense power magic has if players focus on magic or faith builds.

Focusing faith or intelligence in this way can lead to some incredibly overpowered builds.

2 Divinity Original Sin 2

Unlike other RPGs mentioned, Divinity Original Sin 2's magic is made even more powerful through its exploitation of the environment surrounding the player. Combining spells such as creating puddles of blood or water that can then be electrified with a different spell can cause enemies standing in that position to be assaulted by a variety of effects.

Besides the starting spells players are given during whatever class they choose, they can also buy new spells that are not only entertaining but also bring chaos to battles as any mage can easily take over and control their enemy.

1 The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind

As far as franchises go, one of the most broken but entertaining magic systems in RPG history can be found in The Elder Scrolls. In Oblivion players were able to combine spells to create their own once they had become a member of the mages guild however the most powerful of magic can be found in Morrowind.

Spanning across six different schools of magic, each section can either defend and restore the player or damage their enemies. Magic was incredibly overpowered in Morrowind allowing players to keep their distance while attacking in one of the most brutal Elder Scrolls in the series.
